I had an epiphany recently. I was struck by how tamriel rebuilt's quests subconsciously reminded me of Oblivion instead of Morrowind's and I wasn't sure why. Then it hit me. Almost every quest in Morrowind has a degree of dramatic irony where the quest giver is using you. Not just giving quests that serve their interests, but manipulating and deceiving you. Ajira and her reports blatantly taking credit for your work are the most obvious example, but ranis' quests all being her running the guild as a back door protection racket is a lot more subtle, having you kill "necromancers" and shake down locals. So is skink-in-tree's-shade being a vampire in hiding. And with telvanni, it's pretty clear that aryon is taking over the council using you as a patsy.

Second, what are multiple of his quests about? Getting books and secret documents about curing vampirism? I harbor a theory that both meeting the wise woman and escorting that one lady out of town have ulterior motives too, but can't prove it.

And that's exactly the brilliance of the quest writing that hit me. There's subtle hints here and there that change how you interpret what you're doing. You can do everything without questioning anyone's motives, and it works as fantasy schlock, go here, kill this bad guy, persuade this person to do things our way, collect this item. It's all fine like that. But you can realize, for a great many cases, that there's another interpretation. I haven't figured out sugar lips' deal. I think she just wants money?

midnight lasagna posted:Any advice on how to play a sneaky stealy charatcer in Morrowind? This is only my third playthrough and I'm still pretty clueless at this game, and I'm also used to Skyrim where sneaking is the meta and the crouch button makes you invisible. I've got the Morrowind Code Patch with all the bugfixes enabled and the pickpocket overhaul, otherwise everything is vanilla besides a mod for higher draw distance. 1. The early levels of sneak are way too slow to earn, and you basically need to grind by leaving your character stealthed at the edge of an npcs vision and going and doing something else for an hour. 2. It's more fun to get caught than reload. Learn where the evidence chests are. 3. Don't bother trying to pick pocket without mods. Your chances suck even at 100 sneak.

Old Ebonheart Thieves Guild is toppest tier I've messed with so far though. Meanwhile, helnim thieves guild feels like it ends with a giant anticlimax where they're constantly talking about a big event coming, describing the details of how it will work, setting up the players in the story, then skips the event itself entirely to end with killing an unrelated sad loser in the back of a shop.

Mendrian posted:Item scaling ruined a lot about Oblivion for me. Systems in games can produce novel game experiences and replace carefully arranged and designed experiences, if the system is capable of producing unexpected results. Oblivion hosed that up, hard. Sure you can have a spawn point that produces a dynamic monster, but if the result of that dynamism is always some kind of zombie that takes 12 melee attacks to kill and 10 to kill you, that's more tedious than even dying over and over to one that's too hard to beat in one place and one that falls over like twigs in another.

FactsAreUseless posted:Speaking of TR, does anyone know what object or objects cause the massive slowdown in the circle around the castle in Old Ebonheart? The engine can handle most of the town (if I switch off Distant Land while I'm there and keep real-time shadows off), but there's something up with that one small area. Is there something I can delete in the construction set to fix it? I never see anyone else mentioning it. The specific cause is the number of statics in the cell. The town just causes too many render events for the pipeline of a single threaded application to keep up with. Turning down shaders and texture details and things saves very little time because you're not limited by your gpu to begin with. Presumably some cleverness with batching might let the openmw team fix it, but the original engine is just hosed.

FlocksOfMice posted:Are we ever going to see non-openmw get the ability to use more memory than 4gb? Is that even possible? Lately I've had to save and restart every like, 10 minutes in Old Ebonheart to clear the memory before it crashes and for some reason today (I haven't changed anything today? so no clue lol) I can't even go outside at all without it instantly memory-outing itself. Unchecking a bunch of MWSE mods I guess but that memory limit is really brutal. 4gb is what is addressable by a 32 bit executable program. Short of rewriting the engine(i.e. openmw) you cannot realistically achieve that.
