I actually like linearity. Fighting 3 unnecessary battles because you ran into a dead end in a dungeon is not depth. Having to talk to somebody's cat in the basement of nondescript house #4 of boring NPC town in order to advance the plot is not interesting/rewarding. Basically I don't care for a lot of JRPG fluff and I like how FF13 streamlined everything.

Up next is a replay of Final Fantasy XIII-2.

It isn't bad at all. Since Turtles are the best source for both CP and cash, if you didn't grind too much CP somewhere else, you'll finish the crystarium trophy at about the same time you have enough cash for the items trophy. Keep in mind you only need to have held every item - you can sell poo poo you already own to go towards making more weapons. Personally I enjoy turtle fights; its fun learning how to beat them at all then consistently and finally how to optimize your times, and they can still kill you even at full CP.

I found FF13's endgame farm (and pacing in general) far less tedious than pretty much any other entry in the series.

If you want your battles to go faster, you manually cast lightning with your ravager (elemental weaknesses all being the same) because the spell is noticeably faster due to lightning bolts being faster than whatever projectiles the other spells sendout.

Yes. It's completely normal to complete all the optional content at least in FFX vanilla while still maintaining yuna/lulu as casters, tidus/auron/wakka as heavy hitters, etc. You need to make a conscious effort to force lulu through all the +STR spheres or auron through all the +MAG spheres.

Only if you do a huge amount of grinding for grindings sake to approach the characters becoming homogeneous, and even then each has unique equips and overdrives that theres still lots of strategy in switching them out. Never played FFX Intl though (still waiting for FFX HD).

The optional superboss is penance. Essentially max stats, playing blitzball to get wakka's ultimate weapon, and learning the timing for his slots overdrive are mandatory.

There's also a new sphere grid.

Do we know for sure if it's the international version? Part of me sort of hopes it's just the NA version because I'm OCD about trophies and I'm really dreading the grind to prep and fight penance

How the gently caress do you miss a sales target by 3% and then your return on sales drops from 2% to -9%? That's not "primarily due to slow sales of major console game titles in North American and European markets" at all. I'd like to see a breakdown of this because it makes no sense

Edit: Their new president was formerly their CFO and president of SE Finance before that, I'm 90% sure this is mismanagement of funds.

Square is a publicly traded company so all their financials are completely transparent. Sales are only one factor in "return on sales" - there are also fixed & operating costs to consider, so it is quite common for a restatement to yield different deltas to the "sales" and "return on sales" line items. In the statements you're quoting - you can see that sales have decreased by 5M yen, but they've adjusted their operating income downward by 13.5M!

You're right that it's not "primarily due to slow sales of major console game titles in North American and European markets". In those FS you're quoting, Item #2 "extraordinary loss" indicates restructuring costs being the primary driver behind the losses, not market conditions (which taken in isolation would only yield a 3% difference from forecasts).

quote:

In view of the rapidly changing environment of the game businesses, the Company has decided to implement major reforms and restructuring in its development policy, organizational structure, some business models, and others. The Company expects to incur loss of approximately ¥10 billion from such restructuring efforts to be recognized as extraordinary loss about loss from restructuring in the settlement of the account for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2013

The extraordinary loss are composed of loss on disposal of content (approximately ¥4 billion), and loss on evaluation of content (approximately ¥4 billion),and the other(approximately ¥2 billion).

So it wasn't unrealistic sales targets yielding bad results, but an unexpected group restructuring that wasn't in the company's forecasts to begin with. I'm pretty lazy but I'm sure that a further breakdown of each of the restructuring costs is publicly available somewhere.

I'm probably reading this incorrectly; does that say that squaire lost 13 billion yen? Meaning they are in the hole something like 137 million USD, rather than a projected revenue of a few million? :stare:

Short answer yes (with the caveat that the company almost met its revenue goals, but not its income goals)

long answer which is sort of a derail and will bore the thread
You want to look at the operating income line, not the net income line. Net income includes interest, amortization...items that the company doesn't really have any control over during a fiscal year. Operating income still shows a loss; however the trouble is overstated, since it includes a 10 billion yen one time cost of restructuring. The company makes 150B/year so a one-off of 10B will easily be financed over the course of a few years. Now the business reason behind the extraordinary cost is concerning (the notes indicate that 4B of it is disposal, which is oftena euphemism for employee severance), but probably won't hit the company's revenue line for a few quarters since probably a lot of the initial pipeline has already been ironed out

So, I want an honest answer here. It's been almost a decade since I picked up a legitimate FF game and I've been wanting to come back in and try something out since I just played Theatrhythm.

What I'm trying to say is that is XIII worth trying out? All bullshit and fanboyism aside, I want to know if it stands as its own game worth trying or not. I've heard a lot of back and forth about this title and I've been meaning to make my own opinion on it, but since I've noticed the goons around the Games forums have good taste, why not?

I just want honest opinions here. What's good about it? What's bad about it? Is XIII-2 better and worth going through the first? Or is it a complete waste of my time?

You're going to get a lot of polarized opinions.

FF13 is a JRPG without any of the fluff - no minigames, no towns, no talking to random NPC of nondescript house in some town to unlock the super secret sidequest for your ultimate weapon. If you like savescumming rare spawns for superrare drops, or smacking illusory walls at dead ends in dungeons to find hidden chests then you will hate FF13.

If you like:
fast paced rewarding battle system
good music

and don't mind
linearity
anime voice acting
poo poo characterization & story (even for an FF)

then FF13 will be perfect for you. IMO it's the best battle system in the series by a huge margin so there's that to consider. You won't like the battle system if you like mashing attack and potion though.

I know we got on this discussion by saying "Every FF has a poo poo story whatever" but I heavily disagree. The gameplay in these games simply isn't good enough most of the time to justify completely skipping entire cutscenes, the story has to at least be entertaining if not a masterpiece of writing. I thought FFX had an entertaining story, I remember playing through it while other friends were too and getting to school and discussing things like SIN IS TIDUS DAD HOLY poo poo. Plus as far as I know it was the only FF to actually have a straight up bittersweet ending, after a lot of the previous ones teased it. I think FF7, FF8, FF9 all had an ending you were supposed to believe was unhappy but ~it all works out in the end~, the FFX one was something pretty bold at the time.

Different strokes bro.

I guess my standard for gameplay is low enough that I don't mind FF combat divorced from horrible anime stories. And your standard for writing is low enough that FF cutscenes enrich what would otherwise be very shallow gameplay.

Yes and no. The engine mechanics were slightly improved yes, but the combat in 13-2 was less fun than its predecessor (for me anyway) since the nonlinearity led to huge pacing problems and basically no challenging enemies or fun fights. FF13 was a corridor and so the enemy difficulty was paced exquisitely (for an ff) and if you didnt understand the stagger/buff/debuff system by the time you fought the first spacepope you were hosed. a lot of bosses and regular encounters from spacepope through the end of the game are genuinely challenging (and fun).

FF13-2 is the exact opposite of a corridor and so SE has no idea when you'll run into any enemies, and the elegant solution they devised was "make every encounter trivial regardless of party strength". it's pacing is a mess, and i was able to get through chapter 5 without ever changing my paradigm pack or levelling up my monsters.
