Any way to compare shields? I've got a pretty weird one from a rare big monster in a planet where I shouldn't be there yet because of it's threat level, and managed to cheese it because it for some reason didn't jump over a two blocks tall ledge.

qnqnx

I actually kind of liked the armor penetration thing, not for what it actually is, but as some sort of weapon level.
Of course that gets thrown out of the window with hammers, but eh.

Came across my first base on that second world. God drat it's a good thing I crafted that Basic shield (thanks to there being like, 5 times more iron on this ball of snow and slush than my forest world), though threat 1 + Current Snow Gear protective power means the shots that slipped by didn't oneshot me, just hurt.

Shields really trivialize a lot of things, and I'm really glad I got an apparoximately level 10 one from a rare monster instead of another weapon now, paired with a level 10 pistol it made te Penguins a breeze, plus a red stimpack just in case.
I wonder how would it have fared against them before they got nerfed.

Right now, I want Cold and Hunger to be more effective beyond mild annoyances. Especially Cold, which is more obnoxious than dangerous if you do campfire skipping.

What I'd suggest is instead temperature starts in the middle, and is adjusted according to your gear. Temperature-resistant gear would have you start half way to the right, no gear or thin clothing would start you to the middle-left. Extremely hot planets will push you further to the right and vice versa for snow planets. So wearing winter gear to a volcanic planet means you'll bake alive.

Instead of just doing a lot of damage straight up, it should do damage based on how far to the left or right the bar is and also debuff you. Instead of it just being a bar you want to constantly keep filled, you may have to trek through a snow planet where you fight slower and can't jump as high for example.

Finally I'd hope additional weather conditions for planets could require more gear to mitigate. Sandstorms could make you blind without proper protection, snowstorms would be incredibly deadly and so forth. Stuff that makes planets feel more varied and alive.

Didn't the devs say that actual heat wasn't considered for some unexplained reason?
Either way, I hope your ideas get implemented.

And do enemies ever drop guns or is it just certain races?

There must be hidden stats for them then. I tried a shield from a TL20 planet and it blocked stuff in the Alpha sector but on a TL20 planet enemies hit me right through it. Maybe for reduced damage but I still died in one hit because yeah, the armor progression is rough when you have snow infantry gear and can't find/make anything better. :sigh:

The only good way to determine how good a shield is right now is remembering where you got it and note where it stops being useful.
Also the only enemy so far that drops guns are miniboss mobs and I think some NPCs.

For instance, I totally agree with the lack of biome diversity. Once you get past the aesthetics, of which there are a ton of rad ones, MECHANICALLY they all function pretty much the same. There needs to be more biome specific, or even planet-type specific, environmental features, even maybe wildly different styles of terrain generation.

Stuff like biome differentiation and monster mechanical diversity are pretty core issues!
There are actually biomes that are mechanically different, like toxic flower biomes having a lot of poison water ponds.

For the changeable beam-down points, it would be nice if it was just using some iron to craft a pad that looks identical to the beam-down pad on the ship, but can be placed and picked up. Hitting E over the pad first time after you place it would give you a little text box to set the name of the pad, and any other time after the name is set it beams you back to the ship. Then, once you try to beam down to the planet again, it pops up a list of pads showing all their different names, along with the default beam-down point.

That way you'd not only be able to put a beam-down pad outside your house in multiplayer without screwing everyone else settling on that planet, you'd also be able to use it as an impromptu teleporter network.
I was thinking of a buildable beacon to which the ship realigns over.

There is some kind of weird, subtle subtext, and I get this nebulous impression that the Hylotl are actually worse than they appear. Floran dialog includes lines like "you know what you did" and "Floran know the truth". There's something sinister at work here. A friend of mine suggested that the Hylotl actually engineered the planet-eating Tentacle Beasts as a bio-weapon, like the one that destroyed Earth, thus making them a scourge to the entire galaxy. But I don't know if there's actually anything in the texts to support this.

In terms of chronological aesthetics, I'd say it goes Floran (tribal) -> Avian (early Meso-American) -> Glitch (European medieval) -> Human (modern day, presumably) -> Hylotl (cyberpunk/neo-Tokyo stuff) -> Apex (sci-fi future, sterile labs).
Not really, Apex villages are retro, 70's like, Human military bases are definitely generic sci-fi and the technopyramids are Avian, if the guardians there speaking of Kluex aren't a bug..

I think those monitors are pretty easy to find, anyway. The general idea behind their items is that you can make them out of random crap you find rather than using a bunch of ore and stuff, but it means you have to be good at finding and salvaging potentially useful stuff.

That would work if you have alternative armor pieces for each tier, so to not be so dependent on your luck finding so and so item. Ore works because you can always expect to find some.
