What do they like, though? Most of them don’t like WWE, or even watch NJPW. I don’t see them posting about the indies. A lot of what they hate about AEW was super common in WCW and Mid-South and Memphis.

I really don’t think this is about AEW not matching their vision of wrestling anymore. It’s just pure hate-entertainment now.

I've said before but they're clip watching wrestling nihilists. They don't think wrestling will ever be good or popular again.

I think part of it might be latent Vince mentality, where wrestling is deeply embarrassing and shameful for them to be following but they still want the legitimacy of it being mega-popular like it was during the Monday Night Wars.

The clip watching is the equivalent of getting all your news from those twitter accounts that just repost extremely bad takes from pundits and no audience youtubers or watching just the Daily Show or Tucker Carlson.

It's completely unreflective of the majority of what's around but the reaction is pre-packaged for you and it's more emotionally stimulating and fun than doing your own work.

harder in the sense that it'll be drowned out by the clique protecting their obnoxious friend by calling any outside poster a killjoy

The AEW titles are very protected as well so it can't be just anyone hot shotted to the position, you've got to be a HOT proposition and massively over with the crowd even for the TNT title.

At least Thunder Rosa is the heir apparent for the women's belt and PnP are in fighting contention for the tag belts. If they introduce a lucha influenced trios title as the TNT equivalent of Male tag champion, then the Lucha Brothers are a shoe in.

The success of Total Divas, the spin offs, and the retirement probably. Once Vince didn't have to accept him as a wrestler but instead as a reality tv star who he didn't have much creative control over, I imagine things relaxed considerably and it stuck when Bryan returned to the ring (although not enough for Bryan to feel creatively satisfied post-heel run).

I legit loved the NOAH match which had the half hour stare off and also had an extended sequence where the big guy sat on the other guy and tried to force his shoulders down for 10 minutes and the ref had to repeatedly put his fingers under the shoulders to make sure they were touching the ground.

Edit: There should be more spots where a big guy sits on a smaller guy

I guess a promotion that has a two hour show that's all Lucha Underground soap opera stuff and pre-tapes leading up to an hour long show that's just matches before a four hour long quarterly pvp could be cool.

But it's such a convoluted way not to have much wrestling on a wrestling show and relies on the famous acting ability of wrestlers.

Nobody botched a bigger lay up than Brian Cage, AEW gave him everything you need to succeed in the promotion and he failed to convert.

Joey Janela is the only person on the male roster who I think AEW should be doing more with what he's giving them.

It makes sense that people like Inokiist matches and its emphasis on athleticism and intensity, but it did prove once and for all that focusing on those two qualities is a poor promotional strategy.

UWF rules, Bloodsports and Pure rules matches and shows have their place but they almost completely fail to bring crowds back at a level to sustain a promotion.

It's theatricality, characters and storytelling that makes people come back to wrestling time and time again. Just look at how many more hardcore/deathmatch focused promotions have managed to survive where no strictly "sports"-style promotion has managed to.

I don't think you can seriously suggest that Yuki's pre-existing popularity doesn't play some part in how hard she's pushed and where she's been positioned.

I think that TJPW can be credited as creating an environment where her past history can be taken advantage of and in a position where she's not under or over pushed

Her rookie awards don't seem to have been brigaded by her fans either (except maybe the Shupro awards)

On a larger scale, I don't think TJPW needs to build stars like WWE or AEW or even Stardom needs to build stars because that's not what they're selling.

Their strategy is the slow accretion of each wrestler getting more skilled, polished and interesting over years rather than debuting a Goldberg or having an Okada style return from excursion.

It's a very DDT style of booking except they've had much less raw material to start off with. Their rookies move to the midcard and their midcard becomes the main event, main eventers drop down to do rookie mentorship matches. The hierarchy is also all mixed and churned up regularly with repeated popularity poll booking and shoot random order tournament brackets.

Bill Shannon conveniently ignores that everyone who wanted an alternative in recent years was watching New Japan, which is why AEW started on the backs of talent who got over in NJPW.

More people would probably still be watching New Japan if some of the booking hadn't gone the way of TNA
