(Actual shock: Bunch of Fed ships get cloaking devices.) So we have a Fed escort. With a cloaking device (not conceptually weird, but aren't they balanced around not having that?). And a Sensor-Analysis rip-off. I'll withhold judgment until we see stats, but my knee-jerk reaction is "What the actual gently caress."

I don't mind the escort's geometry, it looks like the Defiant and a Jem'Hadar Attack Ship had a baby together. What the hell is up with that ugly materials/textures choice for the new ships, though?

Sighence posted:Since when is all of Fed/klank space in the Beta quandrant? Even I know Voyager didn't spend seven years being awful and trying to get home to the Beta quadrant, and I barely know what a Romulan is. Like others have said, it's incoherent as Hell to begin with and STO hasn't made it any clearer. Basically the entire blue blob on the map, including the parts that aren't covered in actual in-game sectors, is the Federation. But then you have baffling poo poo like Defari space twisting across the map in a non-Euclidean fashion (especially obvious if you're doing things Klingon side) and the Borg sectors that are connected only through transwarp gates but are still filled with star systems that'd be Federation or Gorn space. Best advice is to not think about it. In fact that applies to a lot of STO.

I get what they're trying to do, but what they're trying to do is stupid and awful. Hopefully there'll be more T6 options / accessible T5-Us. Right now my Fed captain's only potential T5-U is the Risian Luxury Cruiser and I wanted something slightly more... Feddish?

I've reached an impasse where I don't know whether I want to... 1) Get a vesta. 2) Get an intel cruiser. 3) Protect my precious wallet from this madness and go play something else. 4) Go through the ~quarter year it'll take me of daily grinding to get a fleet ship w/o real money. I don't mind dropping a few bucks into a game I'm having fun with but it feels like the expansion is going to force me to encroach on pay2win territory here.

FuturePastNow posted:I think a more "realistic" Section 31 ship would be something like a Runabout with an upgraded warp drive and a phase-cloak. I don't see them having enough operatives to crew a big ship. They mostly work alone and sneak around. To be fair, these aren't big ships. The Intel Cruiser clocks in at 350 crewmen, and its the biggest of the three the Feds get.

CommissarMega posted:EDIT: Also, if I play a Romulan and join the Feds (that's a thing, right?), can I do the Fed storyline missions as well as the Romulan stuff? No, even though you choose sides early on, the Romulans still have a specific story arc they follow. They share a number of missions with Feds and Klanks, but don't get access to Fed or Klank specific missions. Which is a good thing, since Romulan missions are much newer than Fed missions and a much better experience to play through.

Think of it less as "missing out on more missions" and more "skipping over a lot of crap filler." The major story arcs these days are shared by all three factions.

Once they started bringing the Trek voice actors onboard it feels like they increased the amount of busy work in the stories just to luxuriate in having oh my God it's Worf! available to them. The three recent episodes all feel like they start turtle-slow, become interesting, then end with a space battle that's at least twice as long as it needs to be.

The voice acting for the entire Second Wave arc is horrible, and if Cryptic had any decency they would've stripped all the voice clips out when they heard the results. Kurland is easy to pick on, the female Vorta that runs the station during the arc is another horrible, horrible feature. Also the writing is terrible and inconsistent, especially around Kara'kun. Also the final mission is a giant pit where you spend half of it slowly plodding along doing nothing but a memorization game for the first half. What I'm trying to say is that the Second Wave arc sucks and I'd rather have had another inexplicable romp through the Fire Caves.
