InterrupterJones posted:Recently I watched Frank and I'm not sure if it's been recommended or not. I do highly recommend it if you like more experimental music and movie-making that matches its oddities. Most of the actors are average, but it's clearly Michael Fassbender's movie, and he owns the part of the title character. It may have you welling up at the end if you have any sort of musical experience. If you don't, it's still an enjoyable ride that's a bit wacky throughout, but has a very heartfelt and slightly bittersweet ending. What was wrong with the other actors?

InterrupterJones posted:There wasn't anything really wrong with the performances, just pretty one-note. The two best performances were definitely Michael Fassbender and Scoot McNairy, but Maggie Gyllenhaal and Domhnall Gleeson were a bit static the whole time. The other two band members were pretty underplayed, and as such didn't really develop as the story went on either. This is definitely the kind of movie that supports those character types, though, so that was likely their intent from the start. Whaaa? I thought Maggie and Domnhall were fantastic. True, the characters are less rangy than Scoot and Fassbender but that's kind of what the movie's about, these people under the sway of this magnetic, unstable person. At times it does read like a Portlandia sketch though.

AFewBricksShy posted:I didn't much care for the movie, but he's phenomenal in Charlie Wilson's War. I didn't like Hanks all that much in it, and I really don't care for Julia Roberts at all for no particular reason, but I'll still watch it if I see that it's on because Hoffman completely steals the movie. Much like Erin Brockovich, the woman that Julia Roberts' character is based on is just way cooler than Julia Roberts.

stickyfngrdboy posted:True crime fans might like the Death Row Stories TV show which I just found on Netflix. Ive only watched the first episode, of eight available. The first episode is about a black fella convicted of the murder of an old white lady and sentenced to death, except it's pretty obvious he had nothing to do with it and htf did this even get to a court to begin with, holy poo poo. Death Row Stories is insane.

NESguerilla posted:True. He still kind of fit in the sense that ken Marino tends to pop in for a season or a few episodes of a show and get cast as a D bag. He kind of just had the same kind of deal on Togetherness. I miss his lovable self on Party Down. I feel the same way about Heidecker, though Heidecker should never play anything but a total rear end in a top hat.

LogisticEarth posted:Well, that's the thing. I agree with you that that was an amazing scene, and there are lots of them. But for some reason the show as a whole falls doesn't build up momentum. You know exactly who the antagonists are, people with the exception of Daniel himself act a bit predictably, etc. Maybe it's a lack of tension? Hard to put my finger on it. I'm OK with it not being the exact same cops and robbers thing as every other show on TV.
