I thinky favorite song from the show is Barbarian, it gets used a bunch but is most notable as being Nanders accompanying music during his float rampage.

The incidental music is what I think of when I think of Turn A though, the music playing during the low key parts; stuff like Girls Rule and Talkative Sochie, just nice fun sweeping themes with lots of fife.

It's a huge soundtrack and probably the most varied of all mecha, there's a specific split in sound for different areas/factions in terms of what instruments get used. If you only like one song out of the 60+ that make up the whole soundtrack including themes that's pretty crazy. You're pretty crazy.

It's a fictional narrative handled by dozens of different writers and directors over a period of decades.

It's going to carry a different tone from incarnation to incarnation and that includes how sympathetic the principal actors are.

A big part of turn a is that the war wasn't inevitable and the thrust was in trying to end it before it got larger.

An acceptable and peaceful return of mooninites to earth was what most people wanted, and how the series ends.

If it wasn't for the people actively courting a war in search of ways to increase their own power or just because war is fun Loran would have probably ended up with sochie though, assuming he ended up in the same place on landing.

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

I really want that series now though, 12 episodes of turn a if the war never happens and the turn a never wakes up and its just about moon people trying to settle on earth and finding a place for themselves.

We've talked before about 0079 having a large female fanbase, but I don't think I had ever heard that G-Reco seemed to appeal strongly to women as well.

Thoughts about this? I think its pretty interesting, especially considering those early posts here on SA when G-Reco was first airing and we had people debating whether the show was sexist or not.

Those people were all dumb as a sack of hammers. The show was really popular with women. People were selling already made gunpla to female fans who wanted character merchandise before real chara stuff was made but didn't care about spending the time to make robots, it was cool.

Sharkopath

The fujoshi doujins were lit af too. :mrgw:

I didn't know a ton of japanese greco fans as it was airing but all of them were women, is my anecdote.

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

Bellri was a popular character and theres a ton of him and Mask stuff but also Manny/Mask cause I guess that romance struck a chord somewhere.

One artist was really into the various smaller characters from the Capital army and just did big comics about them hanging out, that was neat.

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

The people I was talking to knew about gundam but weren't gundam fans before Greco, a bunch moved on to ibo afterwards but not all did, some just really liked the Greco characters and some were put off by the more dour tone of Ibo. I haven't talked to them in a while tho since I stopped p4acricing Japanese I don't know if they still consider thems3lves gundam fans or they filter3d back to just general anime.

That is the extent of my knowledge on G-Reco.

There's a really good part in it that deals with casual racism in a realistic and grounded way that resonated with me a lot.

And then some posters were angry that the racism wasnt like full on hollywood movie overt racism so it was bad writing.

Different tone because robo is more of a Greek tragedy with martial arts than a triumphant shonen sort of deal but its gorgeous and is the same director exploring similar mixes of giant robots and wuxia drama and actuon.

Mika, for all his talent, isn't actually a great fighter. He's a complete brute with the talent to back that up.He's basically raw force and succeeds by overwhelming his opponents with his general speed and power. It's why the greatest challenges he gets are from pilots who genuinely are good fighters whose skills allow them to survive the endless Mikatornado.

It's an interesting dynamic because most Gundam pilots are "My machine is more powerful and I depend on that crutch until my skills develop." Mika in comparison leans heavier and heavier on his crutch to the point he depends on Barbatos to function, with his human body ending up as a part for his Gundam.| Julieta ends up the comparison to Mika, making the choice not to sacrifice herself for her machine even if it meant she would never reach the highs Mika did. However it's also something Julieta had the choice of while Mika didn't. If Mika had the chance to do what she did he'd probably have become an amazing pilot but he never had the choice. He had to fight to survive and learned to lean on every crutch he had because otherwise he was going to die.

A lot of what Mika does with weapons shows this. He can learn to use more complex weaponry but honestly he favors the 'natural' stuff. Brutal beatings, claws, even the tail-whip which ends up feeling like part of his natural body. He'll use other weaponry if he has to but if push comes to shove he isn't a pilot, he's a wolf whose body happens to be a giant robot.

No thats Zoids.

As an aside, is it just me or did Genobreaker wreck the heroes for what seemed like half of Guardian Force

And that main character had pleny of the skills, but just didn't have a machine that could keep up with him at all at that point

That's just canon, The Genosaurer was the absolute tip top normal sized zoid around and the shield liger at best could just stand up to its firepower with the shield. Then the blade liger was developed and was able to surpass it, and the Genobreaker was the counterdevelopment that took the title back.

And then got beaten again by another even more advanced liger.

Zoids is fun.

I dont remember if in guardian force raven had the breaker before vaan got the blade liger though, its been so long.
