Ideally speaking, the hook of Venom is the bipartisan nature of the character. The symbiote doesn't have a completely free will, and largely acts based on the emotions and desire of the host. The host, on the other hand, has very little say over what the symbiote does end up doing. The best Venom stories do a lot of cool stuff with the relationship between the host and the symbiote, whereas the worst just treat him as an angry goop gorilla.

Venom is basically american Guyver anyway.

Aquaman doesn't need to be cool of relevant, all he needs is a good story. He's in many ways a more whimsical character than most popular superheroes these days, but that's a flaw only if you want a narrow range of characters.

Zimmer is extremely effective at what he does because of subtle motif usage that tells a story in itself, directors like Zimmer's style so they temp track stuff with Zimmer stuff and the composer just does tonal music without telling a story with it.

For the other movies, directors who don't care that much about composition don't work closely with their composer on the film, and it's whatever. Without the old style "composer goes crazy with melodies" stye of scoring, this doesn't work.

Dunkirk's (blockbuster) score was arguably the most important part of the movie and drove it more than anything so it still happens; there are just like, 3 composers who consistently work with their directors in detail on scores and a lot of people that could pull out greatness are overworked or rushed.

That's all true. My brother, who's a legit musician, loved Dunkirk's soundtrack and would go into details about how it worked using a style that made it basically a giant crescendo throughout the entire movie.

The thing that irks me the most about Dan's arguments, and the view of the greater critical consensus in general, is the idea that these movies can just be dismissed out of hand, that any meaning one could pull from them is just "cloudwatching", and not something that was deliberately put there. The idea of "quality" as a threshold, that only select movies get to say something, reeks of the worst gatekeeping bullshit, and it's completely antithetical to my vision of what movie studies are.
