PSA: If you buy a surprise ticket don't use the 10-draw ticket that comes with it yet. Save it for the improved SSR odds at the end of the month. . Use the guaranteed SSR ticket now, since it will expire in seven days, but the 10 draw ticket does not expire, so don't use it until a boosted rarity event is going on.

How to Yoda: a primer.

Lots of SSR tier lists make a lot of mention about how powerful Yodarha is for a starter character. And he is! But only if you use him correctly, and most places don't really spell out the mechanics at work.

Why he is special: A 999,999-damage charge attack.

How do you do it?: He starts with a buff "triple shroud" at the beginning of a fight. It has three charges, and doing anything with him uses one or more charge. His normal attack and skills consume a charge, and his charge attack consumes all of the charges. It also does an extra 333,333 damage per charge it eats, so you want to trigger his charge attack when he has all three charges to drop over a million damage.

What's the catch?: He recasts triple shroud on himself every four turns. This means you have to take care to manage his charge level and wait for the recast to buff him up before you unleash the charge attack. (At level 45 he gets his third skill which lets you manually cast the buff and makes life more convenient, but don't waste it because it has a long cooldown.)

What's the BAD catch?: When his buff is depleted, he sucks. He does pitiful damage, he has pitiful defense, and he'll probably instantly die because bosses seem to target him specifically when the buff drops. So there is a gap of at least one round where he's hugely vulnerable and very likely to die.

What do I do about it?: You use his second skill. It gives him 100% dodge for a turn. And as an extra protip, if you use his second skill while he still has his buff up, it spreads the dodge to the entire party, so that's something to consider if you're about to suck down a raid boss's ultimate attack.

So when you're using Yoda, a normal fight should look like this:

Round 1 - Attack (Charges drop to 2)
Round 2 - Attack (Charges drop to 1)
Round 3 - Attack (Charges drop to 0, charge attack should be ready)
Round 4 - Hymn of the Hundreds to stay alive this turn, laugh as all of the attacks bounce off of him (He'll recast triple shroud at the end of the turn, back to three charges)
Round 5 - Ultimate Flash (Do a million damage, charges drop back to 0)

If what you're fighting is still alive at this point, Yoda is probably hosed and about to be one-shotted. You can use his third ability to rebuff him immediately and improve his odds of survival, or if you have another character with a defensive skill, you can use them to keep him alive. He'll be without the buff for three turns if you don't use Perpetual Rotation to rebuff him, so he'd need to be protected for that long until he's in a position to start the process over again.

You honestly aren't likely to be able to clear enough of those boss fights to get the mcguffins to trade for Chun Li or Karin with the resources you've described. You might be able to get enough for one of the weapons, though, so that has value if you can pull it off.

Broadly speaking, the game punishes jack of all trades. Huge amounts of overall effectiveness comes from weapons, weapon skills, and summons. So even if, for example, you have three top-tier fire characters for a party, you're still relatively gimped if you don't also have a good fire summon and fire weapons. The summon's aura alone can easily provide a 40+ percent boost to your attacks. The weapon skill on each SSR weapon you have equipped could be adding another 6+ percent. Do the math real quick and you'll see that your party's power can be tripled by the right equipment.

So the question is less 'what characters do I need?' and more 'if I get these characters, do I have the other stuff to support them, or can I acquire it easily?'

If I get the Special Pick ticket, what's the best things to grab with it? So far I have these for SSRs:

Character: Sophia, Katalina, but here's a picture of my box right now: http://i.imgur.com/E9H3Cca.png

Weapon: Murgleis, Ocean Harp

Summon: Satyr

RNJesus was not overly kind to you at this point. You have a fire summon, a water attacker, and a light support. Satyr isn't so good that I'd feel inspired to build a fire team around him. Katalina is good, so going for more water probably wouldn't hurt, especially if you do the Cocytus fights to pick up his summon for free. Then you'd have a couple good water characters and a decent water summon to go with them. Sophia's great support, and none of her skills specify that they work better on light element, so she doesn't really lose usefulness if you stick her in another element's party.

Ugh, some of these characters' mechanics are hurting my brain. Or rather, trying to make sense of the Japanese wiki writeups of them through Google is hurting my brain. I got Rosetta and am trying to work out what her deal is. I can definitively say that she has a shield that you can activate that also taunts monsters. I believe that the shield gets stronger the more she's attacked while it's up. I also believe that it debuffs the things attacking it, with stronger debuffs as the shield level rises. And apparently deactivating it applies a big attack buff to the party. A lot of this is conjecture thanks to the awful translations; I'm going to have to run her through some fights and keep an eye on what goes on before I'll feel comfortable with how she works.

Korwa's description is another train wreck. "All allies gain Espirit (Uses 2 Fil)" Really. Thanks game, that's loving helpful. Really clears everything up. At least in her case after you've cast her buffs you can inspect them and find out what they actually do.

I don't have a lot of crystals right now. My weapon inventory is full but I have a few SSR weapons. What are some things I should be doing right now? I'm wondering if I can scrape up enough crystals to roll on this event for one but I'd also like to know what my short term goals should be and what I should be building on out of what I have.

Lucifer's completely useless to you without light characters, keep him on the back burner until you have a light party to take advantage of his huge light buff. As for the others, Cagliostro and Yuel are both great characters for their element. Try to scrape together weapons, summons, and other characters as needed to get a fire team and earth team based around them.

It's slow, though. Korwa takes several rounds to toss out enough thread to set up her buffs. I can join a raid with Yoda and have him poop out a million damage within about fifteen seconds, and even then sometimes the boss is dead before I can pull the trigger. That's only an issue when pugging, of course. For my own raids where I'm not having to race high-level players, yeah, I think they're gonna be great.

Yoda Protip (which is a pretty obvious one but might help newbies): When you're raiding during the guild bonus hours, Yoda's doing 99% of your damage. So gently caress off the rest of your SR/SSR team and stick in some random rares. You'll receive a significant medal bonus for having rares in a raid battle, without really impacting the damage you're doing. It's win/win for you.

My understanding is that the star fest will get you a SSR. But not necessarily a SSR character. Non-character weapons and summons count, as far as the star fest cares. For characters, wait for a surprise ticket where you can just pick one, or the legend fest at the end of the month that does boost character odds.

So if I didn't get any SSR characters or weapons from the last legfest, is it a better idea to just save up for the next one?

"Saving up" is a bit of a misnomer here, since it's not possible to roll for the star gacha with crystals. Crystals are only good for the normal legend gacha and should always be saved for a legend fest. Star gacha and surprise gacha can only be rolled for mobacoins, i.e. cold hard cash, so at that point the real question is whether you want to spend real money on it. Of the two, surprise is unquestionably the better deal, since you get to flat out pick your SSR and can then keep the 10-roll ticket for a legendfest. They are of course also much less common.

I've been looking at the SR/notable R lists, but was wondering if anyone had recommendations for particular synergies between characters?

Unless this is a complete waste of time and I should just care about firing off Yoda and giving up.

Fire Yoda and run. For most of these fights odds are very high that you'll barely have time to fire the Yodacannon before the boss dies, so fancy tricks are pretty pointless. I have Sherlock Draph on my Yoda raid team in the off chance that his nuke scores big, but aside from him it really doesn't matter one bit. Even if the fight does let you go for more than one round, the non-Yoda part of your team might contribute ten percent of the overall damage, so it's not worth sweating over.
