I'd like everyone in this thread to take a moment and imagine Ryan Gosling's character in La La Land, who everyone had issue with for being really obnoxious about jazz and not the greatest singer, and replacing that with Miles Teller, who exudes a level of unlikability and smarm that is second to none in Hollywood. Like, Ryan Gosling is charming, and replacing him with Miles Teller would have made that movie many degrees worse, regardless of whether you like it as it is. And I like Miles Teller, in the right role.

Sorry to interrupt the growing realization that Disney will not stop until they are Cyberdyne Technologies with animatronic animals instead of Terminators, but A Movie About Ferdinand The Bull Starring John Cena just released a trailer. I actually think casting the human equivalent of a fighting bull to be the voice of Ferdinand is kinda cute, and the obvious "bull in a china shop" gag was good, but the rest of this trailer looks pretty "meh"

The minimalism and surrealism of movies in that vein (I think of Yellow Submarine in the same group as stuff like Fantastic Planet or Belladonna of Sadness) freaks me the gently caress out and I get uncomfortable watching even clips from them. The funny thing is, on their Wikipedia page, the last three real pieces of news/goings on out of LAIKA, aside from Kubo, are announcing an increase in staff to build up to a one movie-per-year output (from 2 years ago), a couple of options they've taken out, and a movie with an announced release date of 53 weeks from tomorrow without a title, cast announcement, plot synopsis, or anything. Considering both Boxtrolls and Kubo were announced when they were 18 months out, clearly something was going on.

also if we are being speculative and trashy in here I would be willing to bet a large sum of money that Travis Knight is a pain in the rear end to work with. he seems like the type of guy who is just fine at what he does, but since he comes from money he rises through the ranks very easily until he's at the top, at which point he becomes A Super rear end in a top hat. This is entirely speculation based on the fact that his dad owns the company and he at one point released an ill-advised rap record that probably only got produced because he was rich. also i imagine most children of super-rich people are assholes. edit: also i have a distinct memory of reading this article, which is probably too kind to Will Vinton, but still, Travis Knight really doesn't come off as someone who got where he is by hard work and talent. I'm still not 100% convinced that the movie is going to be as good as I would like it to, but I think the trailers show that Pixar got what was not so good about the last one, and have made a movie with a very obvious throughline that looks exciting (that demo derby track with the shooting flames looks v cool). I really liked Anton Ego's review because it's credibly written well (unlike a lot of TV & Movie prose, where you just kinda have to take their word for it that they have good writing), and the voice acting along with it builds up to that enthusiasm for defending something new, that really sells his shift in attitude. I think the "But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so" line feels like an artist putting words in the mouth of a straw man (like, I don't think I could imagine Roger Ebert writing it), but the bit about how a great artist can come from anywhere is really beautiful.
