Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to Colony Ship. I was really impressed by AoD's branching narrative, even if the combat system wasn't that polished. They made a good RPG for a small indie team.

Extremely same.

In good game news, the SE version of Enderal just came out and it kicks rear end. At least a dozen times better than the skyrim campaign, and completely free.

On the one hand, sounds interesting. On the other hand, this will require buying Skyrim.

A fun behind the scenes fact about that bit is that as a joke the devs used a model of a beach ball they had lying around to create the effect and just made it invisible. You're running away in terror from a beach ball bouncing around on the water.

Given the lifetime sales of the franchise and cost of such a project versus the piles of other money Konami is making, I'd say its non existent unless someone rolls up with a brinks truck of cash at the Konami office to make it profitable before a single copy is sold.

The success of the new wave of RE games demonstrates that there is a market and that it'll most likely be profitable (and they probably know it), but this is probably true :eng99:

What is the appeal of a visual novel cuz to me it seems to be the combination of a very bad video game and a very bad book

I don't care for them myself, but they remind me of old "choose your own adventure" books. I think I have an old Luigi one. Something something Peach is kidnapped (again), Mario is nowhere to be seen because reasons. Haven't read it in ages.

Edit: also there are books that combine CYOA with RPG mechanics. Pretty sure all of that is obsolete these days.

Plus we've already seen what AAA Devs think making games more accessible looks like and it is awful, Dark Souls was praised for being the first big game in forever that doesn't desperately drag you to the credits asap

Mostly it's because of the game's slow-burn understated narrative, in a world with branching paths and no map. Not necessarily becasue of its difficulty.

In general more games need to adopt a difficultly menu of options rather then just 3-4 different modes. Being able to enable/disable things like visual cues, UI tips, scaling damage, etc. go a long way to making the game play more engaging for the person playing it as well as letting people make the game as easy or hard as they want. You can't tell me if there was a PC damage taken slider in Sekiro you wouldn't have tons people trying to play the game at 300% increased damage mode for the sake of the challenge.

It's 2021, I don't think games need to still have their difficulty modifiers to 2-3 preset settings and nothing else. There's no shortage of stories about how difficulty modes end up completely hosed because things weren't scaled properly. Make the factory defaults or "intended" settings and then have a whole menu of things to pick and choose.

It's be great if more games went that route, but lots of developers can't even be bothered to make their games' HUD modular, let alone the difficulty settings.

Besides Control and PoE (1 and 2) I can't recall anything recent with customizable difficulty setting.
