He's more like a goldfish floating in a fish tank, and because he's basically running entirely on impulse, everyone is confused and seeking conspiratorial (or "4th dimensional chess") explanations for what are a series of haphazard decisions, the justifications for which keep changing by the hour. Here's an example from an interview with Trump the other day. He says "prime the pump" and then claims credit for coining the phrase, even though you can look it up and see Trump using the phrase for months. But is Trump lying? Not really. Trump = mobster is obvious just from the way he speaks, which is not how he always spoke (when he was younger), as he picked it up through osmosis by being the "legitimate" face for various organized crime interests, mainly money laundering through high-end real estate. It is simply not possible to be where he is and have been in the business he was without being connected to gangsters. the funny thing is I suspect this has a resonance with a lot of Americans who identify with roguish crooks hence the popularity of The Sopranos, Goodfellas, Scarface, etc.
