PostNouveau posted:As an American, I've been really confused that this hasn't happened already. All the UKIP ministers are gone, it's a loving terrible idea to begin with, the Conservatives will be negotiating with a shaky mandate. I'm sure most of the Tory MPs know it's ruinous for the UK anyway. Why is anyone going along with it? Because it's the will of (roughly 25% of) the people!

Thanks Ants posted:They were never popular, they just got a disproportionate amount of coverage. The referendum was a reaction to a perception of how popular they might become. They got 1/8th of the vote in the 2015 election which is pretty popular. If Cameron had never given us the Brexit referendum we'd likely be looking at some UKIP MPs in the next election.

UrbicaMortis posted:I can see that being OK if you can get a separate room. I had a friend who lived in a communal room of a youth hostel for over a year. He didn't mind it but I'd have lost my mind after a month. Having spent 18 months living in hostel dorms it's an absolute loving nightmare. The combination of losing your privacy and the vast majority of your possessions is so dehumanising.

Tory party and press have used the word terrorist because your casual idiot will read that line in the paper and on lists of terrorist attacks this year and assume he's Muslim Terrorist attacks are intended to make a community scared and afraid. That was absolutely the motivation for this attack and it's absolutely right that it be labelled as such to challenge people's "terrorists = Muslim" stereotype.

Borrovan posted:Unlike UKMT, David Davies has managed to achieve a clear and unambiguous result from his Breakfast negotiations, by giving the EU everything they want in exchange for nothing whatsoever. Also, making these kinds of decisions before establishing whether the Government is democratically legitimate is literally fascism. Quite impressive that it only took Theresa May 3 weeks of quiet meditation to come up with that negotiating tactic.

Having worked in this industry and done similar campaigns in other elections I've got some context for this article: - The use of "Axe Research" as a fake market research company looks like it was the call centre's idea and the Tories wouldn't know anything about it. When you do outsourcing like this it opens up the opportunity for a lot of shady poo poo that the client companies are never aware about. - Saying that they call "on behalf" of the Tories is the legal requirement. - Any TPS records that was called would definitely have given consent to be called at some point time either directly to the Tories or through a marketing call. Call centres have been really focused on data consent for the last couple of years. Sometimes consent is gained through underhanded means and sometimes people are too polite to say no to being contacted when asked. When it's the latter there's not much you can do apart from get out of the call. - The use of leading survey questions is totally bullshit, definitely canvassing and the Tories aren't the only party who do it.
