I used to know a woman who's an artist, and years ago she was working in a care home for the elderly while studying at university. While there one day she saw one of the residents who had just learned that her husband had died. This girl's first instinct was to take a photo, which I've seen. It shows a little old lady weeping, with her face mostly covered by her hands. The artist didn't ask permission before taking the shot.

I'm not sure it ought to have been taken at all.

If you're working in a care home I think part of the duty of care to those patients/clients/whatever should probably include not taking photographs of them, yeah.

Are we to assume that the reason the question was asked repeatedly is that they do not believe Corbyn will renew trident, that once he is prime minister he will renege on the promise to do so? I'm sorry I'm not up on the matter, is this a thing that could happen?

If it is, I can see why this is a big weakness for Corbyn personally, if not then he needed to stick to stressing that I guess and point to the audience member's point about it being for future PMs and potential threats years from now.

So when Theresa May is quoted this morning as supporting 'shoot to kill' wtf does she mean or any of the assembled journalists understand her to mean?

That when we did it with the IRA it was fine, or that we are doing it again now? Or just words are now meaningless beyond having used up a small sliver of time so that we can all get on with our decay into dusty nothingness?

Thank you for this. As an American, I'd say I'd come down on the 'Republican' side but I recognize that this is driven by how highly romanticized the IRA is in American Catholic/Irish-American circles. I mean poo poo we have a sitting member of Congress who raised money to buy arms for them.

Not that my opinion matters much...its not my country after all.

I spent a year at an American uni back before 9/11 and one of my good friends would regularly insist on telling me how cool his grandma was for smuggling diamonds for the IRA. We were both young and dumb and I suspect this was a story lots of Irish Americans would trade on when the reality was probably er... just not true.

9/11 caused him, I think, to realise for the first tie the impact of terrorism and that he was boasting about raising funds to kill civilians and he hasn't raised the issue with me since. Although we both also grew up I guess.

I think my point is probably, as a British person in their mid thirties I don't really feel comfortable claiming I know anything about this and would rather we all move on.

Not if Theresa May keeps burning down blocks of flats to extend it there isn't. One wonders if her inability to perform the simplest of group activities in time in Paris wasn't actually a calculated manoeuvre to establish a heavily photographed alibi.

Wooden battens wouldn't have been used because they would require a small amount of carpentry skill on site. Every modern building system is designed in a way that allows the manufacturer to emphasise the "low skill" nature of installation.

Sure, but when you're on site and poo poo doesn't fit, its quickest and easiest to use bits of batten and whatnot to bodge it so it looks alright and no one really minds because no new expensive and time sapping re-engineering is required and no one notices anyway.

Except of course all the clever safety/fire/whatever considerations designed into the product have been completely voided.

Finding the national credit card an apt and helpful analogy for economic matters it seems prudent to find similar for nuclear warfare. I submit it is comparable to gun control. Whilst we in Britain ban guns because they are bad and kill people, relying instead on the rule of law to police our nation and keep people safe, the USA suggests if you want to keep safe from being shot you better buy a gun so you can shoot back or possibly first.

When it comes to international politics and nukes we appear to prefer the american policy. Hmmm. I think I have decided that we either need to get buying guns or stop having nukes, just as a matter of consistency.
