So the police are literally forbidden by state law from banning guns at these things, they aren't wrong about that. Remember, VA is one of the most progressive states in the south but when it comes to guns it's basically anarchy. The cops were being deliberately overcautious and as it turned out basically no Confederates showed up; there were a tiny handful who got jeered at by the crowd and then their tires got slashed and they had to call a tow truck and go home. Then a couple more showed up late and got told their friends already left. So turns out transforming my neighborhood into the loving Green Zone wasn't really needed, but better safe than sorry I guess.

All in all it was an appropriate end; after all, the last time a bunch of Confederates were in Richmond, they did a bunch of property damage then ran away. This was just payback.

The walks are ratcheting up. The number one question is no longer "oh, there's an election?" We are now at "Which one is the Democrat?" 42 people came out to walk for the governor's race, and we're starting to work for Elizabeth Guzman in the House of Delegates race.

People are starting to wonder what the candidates stand for as well, and that's where it's fun to watch released staff learn. It's not enough to repeat 1-3 talking points that the home office in Richmond provides. You have to know what your guy is for. You read this thread, so you know that and I know that - you can't just say "the other guy is a shmuck, vote for me!" Teaching people how to use their own story to explain why their guy is their guy is everything. My job next week is to train / retrain everyone in the office to speak like a human and knock on doors like they're people, not just marching band teens with a script.

Side note: actually ran into marching band teens in Fairfax County yesterday. They were rehearsing their speech while walking to the next door. We had a laugh about it. Door knocking is hilarious and awesome. Democracy is awesome. Getting people to get down for a cause is awesome.

Last round of polling has Northam +6, and the Kochs responded with a $2 million ad buy. Northam apparently had a response to said ad buy ready to go, as VA Dems often do; they've even tactically positioned the response to run immediately after the Koch attack ads. It's kind of amazing.

The north is feeling upbeat. 51 days to go.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I'm saying Obama can accomplish a lot, but over the last 8 years I saw a willingness to uphold decorum and use traditional methods of action stymie his results. That's left me unconvinced he'll be able to make a meaningful difference and I would prefer to be confident his efforts won't be for naught.


I'm saying Obama's power is fleeting and the longer he disengages from politics it will be harder not easier to get things done. For example, if we had OFA beating the war drums on ACA still, I wouldn't be so worried that Obama will fail to utilize the power he has, but unfortunately OFA hasn't even put out a new blog post since February.

So yeah, maybe Obama will decide in a few months to fully attack gerrymandering and he'll crush it. I'd love that, but I can't get my hopes up anymore.

The approach you're talking about - not being satisfied as long as there are still important problems to be solved - is the only reason the progress you mention has happened in the first place. Your attitude only really makes sense if someone is actually saying "I'm not going to vote for Democrats because of this", but simply expressing dissatisfaction as long as your political goals aren't being met is completely reasonable.
