New Chicago resident here and I'm wondering if y'all could answer some questions I had based on this story: https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2019/5/17/18629590/lori-lightfoot-chicago-city-council-committee-leadership

1) Does the Mayor get to pick Committee chairs, or is she just saying she wants these people and then the Council is going to vote for them because she's the Mayor and they do what she says?

2) What's a floor leader?

3) Is it common to be as explicit as they are being about how chairs are rewards for support (especially with Waguespack, at the end of the story)?

e: I just noticed my tag, which I got in 2015 while living in Texas to piss off someone in the D&D chat thread who really liked Rahm

Seems like the rates aren’t needed but they want to pass the rates so that people can’t scaremonger about what the rates will be.

How often does the Illinois legislature meet and for how long? I keep seeing stories that say the last day of the session is Friday but I can't figure out when they'd be back. I'm coming from Texas where they only meet once every two years, so if they don't get something done it's basically dead til after the next election.

e: also Capitol Fax's website really slows down my computer and I can't figure out why because their website looks like trash

Also I tried to call my state rep and state senator to tell them to shift money in the capital bill from roads to public transit. I had to leave a message for my senator, but someone picked up in my rep's office. I told them my spiel and then asked if they needed my address or name or anything and they were like "nope thanks, bye!" Very weird.

Anyone have a good roundup of what got voted on today? It seems like a lot, and some of it might even be good?

https://twitter.com/WillGuzzardi/status/1134976002256461826

Looks like my calls worked! I think that's an extra $2 billion to transit compared to the original.

Figures from the original were $28.6 billion for transportation, with $3.4 billion of that for transit. $10 billion or so was for *new* roads and bridges. So guess they cut out a lot of that road money.

Tribune story today says Illinois passed a reverse version of SB4 in Texas - that law required police departments to cooperate with ICE. The Legislature here passed one prohibiting cooperation agreements with ICE. Seems like a big deal and also good, I’m surprised that it didn’t get more press.

Hearing on the fair scheduling ordinance today and the mayor showed up (to listen, not to talk) which is apparently not common! This ordinance is already sponsored by 26 aldermen so if she okays it it’ll probably pass.

So Chicago, hosed or super hosed? I was not able to watch Lightfoot's speech last night.

$838 million budget deficit, so every so slightly less hosed than people were expecting. She mainly said the various things she is considering but a lot of them depend on the state giving us the power to do the thing (like tax services, or fix the casino plan). Property tax is still on the table if none of those things work out.

I was doing some looking yesterday and I can't loving believe that Missouri has a population of just over 6 million when their two biggest cities: Kansas City and St. Louis have just less than 500,000 people and just over 300,000 people respectively. In fact their top 10 cities have less than 1.5 million people combined.

That is a fuckload of people living way out in the middle of nowhere.

I mean I guess living near Chicago just has me not remember exactly how small actual cities are because Aurora only has like 120,000 people in it. Or I guess I should really look more at combined statistical areas since the St. Louis CSA has almost 3 million people.

Yeah I think St Louis on the MO side is a tiny central city but there are like a million little suburb towns right next to it because white flight people don’t want to share a government or something.

Conway being “self” funded by his dad really turns me off and Fioretti was endorsed by the FOP so I’m sticking with Foxx.

Discussing with my dad last night about the election (even though its on the Nov ballot) and he kept bringing up a point on if the Graduated Income Tax Amendment were to past the IL constitution would be open to any change moving forward for some period of time. This doesn't make that much sense to me how one change allows for anything else to be change/proposed to be changed.

Any truth to this?

It would be open to any change in the same way that it was before in that the legislature would have to pass something and then we’d all have to vote on it.

Maybe I'm being naive, but is there really that much of a threat in the rural counties? Seems like it would make more sense to just close the handful of counties with urban/suburban areas that would be most at risk.

In terms of spread maybe not but if an elderly person two hours away from the nearest hospital gets seriously ill they’re probably hosed.
