He probably has the norovirus-like illness my family had last weekend. If that’s the case it will run its course in less than 24 hours. I took him some Gatorade, saltines, and removed the electric element from an indoor electric fireplace we have and took it out to him, so hopefully even though he feels like death he may yet survive in spite of it all.

We were sick Friday 2/9 and Saturday 2/10 - the day Dave showed up - and I made a pointed effort to quarantine us to try not to get him sick. He came back with the trailer the next day (Sunday) and by that point we were mostly alive.

I guess whatever virus this is, takes a week to bake, but is fast-moving and resilient. I Lysol'd the hell out of the door handles last night just in case, but watch us all get sick again...

I know everyone has their own reasons for such things, but I am generally against cats being outdoor animals especially where we live as we have hawks, eagles, owls, coyotes, and all manner of predators around, including the deadly SUVicus mallcrawlicus in droves.

Well, our dumbass cat since moving has decided that he should be an indoor/outdoor animal, in spite of coyotes showing up in our front and back yards now on the regular. One such excursion also resulted in him rolling in what must have been a patch of goatheads and other burrs. Temporary regret has yet to translate into healthy respect of what I suspect would be a complete inability to escape a coyote. I give this fat rear end in a top hat 6 months if he keeps managing to sneak outside. Dave has been tasked with the solemn duty of yelling at the fat rear end in a top hat to go back inside if he's spotted outside.

Tremek

The cat has never been intentionally allowed outside. Cat + 3 kids 6 and under = cat has opportunities in spite of the adults' best efforts. If a kid lets the cat out and he disappears one day, that may end up being a tough life lesson.

Don't get a naked bike - that means no wind protection, and your sweet-summer-child dreams of an all-year vehicle will very quickly shrink to less than 6. Bear in mind it takes infinitely more motivation to get on the bike when the weather sucks, and when you have your fat La-Z-Boy Safari sitting there waiting to take you to get your pack of smokes, the bike won't happen.

I think the biggest problem with an F3 you're going to face is that with no pun intended, you're a big motherfucker and that's a small bike. You'll feel like you're doing origami to get on it, will have a ton of weight on your wrists unless you also commit to doing crunches every day, and the riding position itself is just inherently uncomfortable for anyone approaching 6' tall much less over. Likely so much so that you won't want to be on it for more than an hour at a time, and remember CO is pretty big.

Can dad sell the F3 to finance something easier to live with? +1 to the SV650 except you need a fairing, and I'm not just being a wuss about that. Naked bikes are awesome in premise but a whole lot less awesome when you're doing 85 on the highway and conditions aren't absolutely perfect.

Dave is like 6'4" or something decently tall. A road bicycle at 25 mph and a sport bike at 75+ mph are completely different worlds. As you're not pedaling you're also not extending your legs - you have them pulled up for clearance - and thusly your knees are going to be hitting your elbows. The wind buffeting at highway speeds without a decent fairing is going to either hit you in the chest and be quickly fatiguing, or otherwise encourage you to lay down on the tank of the bike in a way I assure you is not comfortable for long stretches. Also consider that if you're livin' the explorer's life, you're going to want panniers, and that's usually easier to put on stuff that's less extreme.

I don't think a 600 or a naked bike is going to be much fun for someone as big and tall as you, and on the other side of the coin echoing others in here your first bike should probably be something far less high strung IMO.

In order to get to "I can do this job and do it well" I think figuring out what you need in your head and what you need around you to make sure you can wake up and be somewhere on time reliably is going to take a lot of mental and situational legwork first, all of which will continue to build toward any positive outcome no matter what you end up doing for a job or career. $0.02.

This took me years to embrace. Even if you feel like you can and want to, don't stay up that late and get up at a reasonable hour. Asleep before midnight and awake before 8 sounds dull but is good for you. You'll need to embrace a regular sleep schedule once you figure out what you're going to do anyway, so may as well start living like you're doing it already so you can adjust more easily. Also 3rd shift stuff is a terrible idea for most humans, especially someone fighting addiction and needing support systems.

You have a special opportunity to move away from hand-to-mouth subsistence and into behaviors and lifestyle patterns that are across the board better for you. If you're not blowing cash on cigarettes, $6 coffees, and booze, your funds will go a lot further!

Don't just look for a job. Use your benefits, start the (hard) work to get your head right with therapy and doctors, and commit yourself to making positive changes across the board. Only then should you be figuring out what it is you're going to do to earn a wage.

Kidding aside, I knocked out a bunch of teeth while loving around in high school and hey who knew but the ramifications are unpleasant for the rest of your life. Funny timing, but I too just had two more implants put in this morning. $8800 for the two new ones, the outside two are ~18 years old now, but in 4 months once I'm all healed up this should be good to go. Ironically I had great teeth before impacting solid objects with my face, haven't even had a cavity as an adult.

My rough guess is Dave's pro-bono dentist would be charging $35k+ for all this work. Speaking from at least my own (muted by comparison and not due to drugs) experience - the quality of life Dave will experience once he can finish getting through all this trauma will be life-changingly awesome.

Sidecar bikes are rare and fairly expensive - Urals by and large aren't cheap - and Urals in particular are unreliable heaps. Worse yet, sidecars don't allow for countersteering and leaning into turns as you're taught with a traditional motorcycle. They combine the worst characteristics of cars and motorcycles - you'll hit every pothole much like a car, they're heavy and lack maneuverability compared to a standard motorcycle, and can be very dangerous in panic-maneuver situations.

He'll probably ask me again tomorrow too

Not to put too fine of a point on it, but NE isn't a great place to move to. Did you know that somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% of CO's workforce telecommutes to jobs now?

NE will either follow in this trend because the workforce will be cheaper than primary and secondary markets since major employers continue to flee the state, and, as you wrote, there's not much demand in Nebraska for those jobs, so it will either become a wholly dependent welfare state like much of the South, or it will adapt and allow for the information economy to take advantage of cheap labor. My uninformed prediction is it will probably end up somewhere in the middle, but that doesn't speak well for the future of Valentine at the moment.

Dave: I think you should choose to train in something a robot can't easily do over the next 35 years of your working life, and creativity and problem-solving are things you enjoy. Can you share your list of potential occupations?

With that said, as I wrote before, I believe you also need to seek therapy and treatment that will allow you to hold yourself together, which you're going to need before you can find work that's fulfilling and a long-term strategy. Expecting that you can be successful without also spending time on getting your head in the right place to manage a complex future is a major gap from my view. Are you setting up counseling/therapy in CO?

See, Nebraska appeals to me specifically because I could easily do some sort of manual labor. I love the town, the people are nice, the world is slow and uncomplicated, and it's small town America. Cost of living is incredibly low, so some sort of agriculturally related job or the aforementioned HVAC, welding, construction, or ranch work would be enough to pay the bills and annoy DJDaddo around town every weekend. Valentine has always been remote since its inception, I don't see why tech coming or not coming to it would change the town at all. It's just low stress out there, minus the weather. And once again, I'm saying its a down the road kind of plan. Multiple years out. But since we were discussing future planning ahead, it made sense to me to maybe focus on a job path that would be in demand in both Colorado and rural America.

Although I thought you said you didn't want to mechanic any more as it was too hard on your body? - I guess you can do manual labor anywhere. But you shouldn't do it in western Nebraska. Why?

I think most of western Nebraska, in absence of significant investments in renewable energy, is going to die a slow death, and it won't be with a bang, but with a whimper.

There's not much in Valentine but cows. The beef industry is seeing increases in consumption in the US, but also seeing lower prices for said beef so the gains in volume are muted by the lower prices at market.

Worse yet, the farming sector of Nebraska is lagging behind most of the rest of the state - see slides 13-21. Bad portents for a region entirely dependent on cows.

Other considerations; Cherry County has at $594 some of the lowest average paid weekly wages in the state; and while as a composite, Nebraska itself is squarely in the middle of the spectrum in terms of states experiencing economic growth that's completely due to growth from Omaha and its surrounding regions (note that CO is ranked #1.)

On the topic of energy investments, see the map below for a pretty clear picture of the dearth of growth that is western NE (click here for site):

Also remember you couldn't qualify for public assistance while living out there.

Long story short - I simply don't think NE is a good goal for you to aim at.

Unless you're ponying up for insurance out of pocket, the chance of you doing manual labor and having insurance is slim to none. So you won't have access to health benefits, the pay will be poo poo (but the health care premiums will continue to increase), the work includes some of the highest occupational risk of any job in the country, and there shouldn't be any compelling reason to want any of this.

Final thought: 84% of Cherry County voted for Trump, so make of that what you will.
