James McAvoy on advice for his Dune "dad" Timothy Chalamet:

"I was in an adaptation of the second and third books. He is in the first book. And he's playing a character who ultimately becomes my father, in terms of the character dialogue. So, no. I've got no advice for him. And he doesn't need any advice from me, he's a cracking actor.

But I'll tell you what's one really good piece of advice that was given to me once, was by the cast of ... what was the show called again? Farscape. And it was at the L.A. premiere of Children of Dune, and they said to me, that the thing with this sh*t, i.e. science fiction, is that you have to believe it more than you believe good writing. Good writing, you can just do. It's easier. But this stuff is hard, because it's so bonkers, you know what I mean? And I've really, I've always remembered that advice and taken it to heart. It's so kept me going really, through a lot of science fiction and fantasy work that I've done. Because it was Claudia Black that said it. And I think that's just good advice for any actor doing any kind of science fiction and/or fantasy, you know?"

'"Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that,” WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff told Deadline yesterday in a sit-down chat regarding the conglom’s full support of Dune 2."

Watched this in IMAX and later at home: I didn't feel either approach had any issues with brightness in my experience. I thought the desert landscapes were gorgeous, personally. However, I will say that in the IMAX, some of the abrupt shifts from darker scenes to light scenes would make my eyes hurt briefly.

Overall, I really liked this, but I would have liked to have seen Thufir, Yueh, Piter, and Gurney have more screentime and I hope they do en up having meaningful roles in part 2 (other than Piter). I found it interesting that nearly every "joke" in the movie was represented in the trailers, and beyond that the movie was relatively humorless (which I don't mean as a detraction.) I think they could have benefited showing the trip from the landing field to the palace structure on ground, maybe, rather than air to give a closer, more personal view of city. They probably could have bundled some of the scenes of the Madhi worshippers in this part. I was impressed with the depiction of Salusa Secundus and the Sardukar. Jamis' death and Paul's vision of the jihaad in the tent were moving scenes to me.

I'm anxious to see how the Emperor is portrayed in part 2 and would like to see more Guild stuff.

What do the worms eat ?? It can only be sand trout

The appendix refers to "sand plankton":

"Now they had the circular relationship: little maker to pre-spice mass; little maker to shai-hulud; shai-hulud to scatter the spice upon which fed microscopic creatures called sand plankton; the sand plankton, food for shai-hulud, growing, burrowing, becoming little makers."

"At the desert edge of the plantings, the sand plankton is being poisoned through interaction with the new forms of life. The reason: protein incompatibility. Poisonous water was forming there which the Arrakis life would not touch. A barren zone surrounded the plantings and even shai-hulud would not invade it."

"The second discovery concerned the sand-worm. These mighty creatures began their lives as sand plankton, then matured into the sandtrout form before becoming worm, It was the sandtrout phase — in which the "water-stealers" swam freely through the sand and sealed off all available water in the porous lower strata."

I don't get the criticism about Jessica being too emotional. She only lets her guard down when she's either in private or with a close family member.

You've got to consider the position she's in throughout the movie. Up front she almost loses her son and is all but disavowed by the organization she was raised in. She knows what's likely to happen with the move to Arrakis and that she's likely to lose everyone and everything she cares about (and does with the exception of Paul.) She then later breaks down after the fall when its obvious the love of her life is dead.

The movie doesn't have the inner monologues the book. How else are you going to see the inner turmoil unless the actor emotes it? Maybe I'm just being defensive of the movie, but I feel like people would be complaining like she was an emotionless ice queen if she didn't feel what was going on around her at all. For me it was a welcome change from prior adaptations (although even those had emotional moments for Jessica, too;) but, I think what might be different here, is that Jessica has a larger focus than in some of those versions.

When i saw it in the theater initially i was a bit shocked they didn't show the jump, but when I watched it again I got the impression it was showing more of a portal-type effect.

Apparently War Thunder is doing some kind of "Dune"-themed April Fools Day mode.

quote:

From April 1st 09:00 GMT until April 25th 11:00 GMT

The desert planet is so beautiful when the sun is low. Rolling over the sands, you can see cinnamon in the air, the most important resource in the known universe. Two mighty houses fight for control of the cinnamon fields - the House of the Bull, ruled by tyrannical Mister Paejeh, and the armored corps of the imperial aristocrates, the House of the Hawk, new governors of the planet. Cinnamon fields are the home of gargantuan sand worms, revered by the local population as divine beasts known as Fathers of the Desert. The worms make dangerous harvesting in the desert deadly. Roars of engines and rolling over the sand cause sandworms to attack harvesters and escorting combat vehicles. Father of the Desert comes to punish noisy neighbors!

The mission objective is to achieve control over three key points in the desert location. The Houses of the Bull and Hawk use the same imperial combat vehicles, but each House has its own unique combat unit. Proceed with extreme caution! Firing guns and moving at high speed attracts the sand worm!
