we could probably stand to lose a few movies and TV shows, but I don't think they should be lost to time due to neglect OR corporate greed. We should vote on 5 movies and 5 shows every year which get destroyed forever.

there are similar ones I've seen that have a small conveyor built into that platform the bottle falls on, and then the dispenser is on the right side of the machine under where you put the cash in. that way the machine just conveyors it over to the dispenser slot instead of setting it up for an 18 inch drop

I think the industry belief is that TTS expands the audiobook catalog and lowers the cost of entrance to getting an audiobook out there. But true audiobooks, as opposed to TTS narration, are a higher quality and represent a 'performance' rather than a piece of data transformed into a narration. The difference is subtle, but it matters in terms of branding and quality of product produced.

It'll probably be that many titles are available on TTS only, many titles (particularly higher tier books) are only available via human narration, and many titles, both are available, though maybe not readily at the same time from the same distributer.

Which is really to say, audiobook listeners care A LOT about their narrators and the value they add to the performance.

in Infinite Jest, everyone is creeped out by video calling technology because it means you have to look good to talk on the phone and it shatters the illusion that the person on the other end is giving you their full attention. So eventually, everyone just buys specialty pictures to put in front of their cameras of what they'd like to look like, so that the other person can have something nice to look at and both parties will be freed of the obligation to spend 100% of their attention on the call.

I really like the chapter where Hal's Grandpa/James's Dad is telling James about how the world of man is made of machines and that every machine is made for a purpose and must be respected and used with the intention of that purpose.
