How can we lose so much more than we had before

So I for some reason got into VR to play Elite Dangerous when Odyssey came out and now I stupidly bought into Star Citizen after looking at it for years, because a bunch of people online keep swearing that the game is real and has things now.

I make terrible decisions with my life.

Anyway I loaded it up and hit the button to go into the sandbox, and made my character with what is one of the weirdest character creation systems I have ever used, and was dropped in I guess my apartment building. Then I walked around and there were a bunch of npcs doing nothing that I can't do anything with. It is flashing literally dozens of help text things at the bottom of the screen, and I wandered around thinking that he game would have something that would allow me to fly the ship I bought to get into the game. So I took a tram to the spaceport and there is nothing there to interact with. Am I missing something? If I wanted to play a game where I walk around a city with nothing to do and npcs stand on top of each other and I can't interact with vendors, I'd play cyberpunk.

Seriously can't someone make a game that is a space world that you can fly around in just sol and fight for control of things, and take over stations or something and it's just a more fleshed out world that isn't a mile wide and an inch deep?

Someone should go suggest that instead of spending thousands of dollars for a fake spaceship in a game that doesn't work, they should instead donate the money to some nonprofit or even the government in order to help fund the development of actual space exploration and scientific research. Be sure to throw in that just giving money to CIG is just lining a business' profitline and isn't actually helping people in the real world. That'd be some good content.

I mean I loved SWG. I want to have some level of interaction with the world besides doing dungeons and raids. The problem is that SC isn't even set to provide this. They have all this weird tedium that some people apparently want but it's all meaningless busywork like making your bed or other nonsense interactions, but is there a plan to allow you to have a station built in the world? Or can you take over some colony so that your alliance/guild/squadron owns it? Even E:D has that although their system is all background and ultimately doesn't do a heck of a lot unless you want to roleplay the BGS. There is a middle ground that companies can take with this stuff but a lot of companies (cough wow cough) don't' want to add the most basic "everyone has their own guild hall you can go to through a portal" just as a retention method of giving people a goal of getting crap from activities that they may or may not be running (incentives).

Of course with SC, I suppose the problem is that they'd love to make it so you can get a station, but you'd have to cobble up 375,000 dollars with your friends to buy it with real money.

Star Citizen: The game would be done if it wasn't for the alpha

edit: I'm still in awe at how broke brained you would have to be to think that having to have a playable alpha would slow development down so that a game that has taken 12 years is now going to take 30. I mean, you have to have the playable alpha internally to test the drat game? maybe what's delaying it so much is having your devs make coffee makers when the server's underlying technology for feasible performance apparently isn't even started? seriously Star Citizen's development is the ceo of a company that builds houses going to a house with a concrete slab and 3/4 of the basic framing up and saying "ok next start painting the interior walls"

Despite the fact that ED was delivered late, mostly unfinished, very buggy (it still is), and for non-space sim fans is as boring as watching paint dry, they delivered as promised. In fact, they exceeded my expectations because I wasn’t expecting, nor wanting, more than that which they delivered. What most of us wanted was a bigger and better Elite, with modern day tech. And they delivered in spades.

Now, they’re rumored to be considering adding planetary access and such, though it’s anyone’s guess what form that will take. From where I’m sitting, and given my experience in chasing that particular whale, I’ll believe it when I see it.

As someone who has been playing a lot of E:D and the garbo space legs they added that honestly kind of destroyed the game's momentum and led to them putting the console versions into maintenance mode, all I can say is oof on his comment there lol

They are selling new 1600 dollar spaceship packages. You can buy them and get access to the game immediately. It is, for all intents and purposes, a live game. This entire "we'll sell you a product but it's a piece of poo poo so we'll call it an alpha so we're safe from criticism lol" is just nonsense. Game companies need to stop trying to have their cake and eat it too on this.
