Why would you let a passenger sit where they can grab any knob or lever without warning?

Helicopters are cramped and expensive to fly. Empty seats mean empty pockets!

Edit: also, it's a helicopter, so I assume every button, knob, dial, switch, lever, and surface could be labeled "touch this to kill everyone."

The whole thing was a gigantic red flashing WARNING sign from the moment of conception. They were well beyond the point that any one portent would give them pause.

Like, if you haven't already hit the eject button after hearing, "we're steering with an off-brand Xbox controller," then a little thing like being lost in the middle of the ocean for a few hours probably doesn't register.

There were lots of other warning signs but I don't think an off-brand Xbox controller is necessarily one of them. It's a device that speaks standard protocols and also has had a vast amount of ergonomics research put into letting the user comfortably and quickly express a wide range of actions on a compact form

I dunno, I see where you're coming from with regard to standardization and invested research, but I also feel like cheapo Logitech controllers off Amazon have pretty low marks for build quality and controls. They even mentioned in that video posted that they carried redundant controllers onboard due to reliability concerns.

But you know what, the controller is whatever. Is that monitor screwed directly into the carbon fiber pressure vessel? I'm not an expert on composites but maybe that's not a great thing.

If you look at the picture I posted above, you can see they've got a cylindrical crew compartment that's seated inside the pressure hull. The screens are anchored to that.

The concerns Lochridge voiced came to light as part of a breach of contract case related to Lochridge refusing to greenlight manned tests of the early models of the submersible over safety concerns. Lochridge was fired, and then OceanGate sued him for disclosing confidential information about the Titan submersible. In response, Lochridge filed a compulsory counterclaim where he alleged wrongful termination over being a whistleblower about the quality and safety of the submersible.

quote:

At the meeting Lochridge discovered why he had been denied access to the viewport information from the Engineering department—the viewport at the forward of the submersible was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters, although OceanGate intended to take passengers down to depths of 4,000 meters. Lochridge learned that the viewport manufacturer would only certify to a depth of 1,300 meters due to experimental design of the viewport supplied by OceanGate, which was out of the Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (“PVHO”) standards. OceanGate refused to pay for the manufacturer to build a viewport that would meet the required depth of 4,000 meters.

Oh.
