Ms Adequate posted:Nah the cruelty is the point. I remember a documentary I watched a few years ago - think it was Portillo whomst was presenting - and after finding a potential means of execution involving some gas or other widely believed to be painless if it was used for such a purpose, took the idea to some top pro-execution oval office in Texas or somewhere. I think it's only Washington state that bothered to go with measured drop hanging. Idaho and (at one point anyway) Utah let you pick firing squad, which seems fairly humane compared to all the rest. I'm surprised it isn't more popular given certain law departments' love of shooting people and the psychological positioning of the gun as a tool to turn injustice into justice. Portillo's method was dry nitrogen gas, which works very well, but you might die without knowing it, so justice does not happen. Also he got hanged in effigy in the documentary so it's worth watching. Anyway, speaking of extremely normal things happening in America, Maryland has called in the National Guard and state police to guard coronavirus tests and supplies, to stop them being seized by the federal government to be redistributed to states that DJT likes. Soylent Yellow posted:It's rather telling that livestock is slaughtered with quicker and more reliable methods than people. The US execution methods (lethal injection, as well as the older mostly discontinued methods like the electric chair and gas chamber) just have so many potential points of failiure built into them that I can only assume they're deliberately needlessly complex. I think this is in part due to proponents of the death penalty having a compulsion to add a sense of theatre to the process. Something as quick and simple as a captive bolt gun or nitrogen asphyxiation wouldn't satisfy this need. You don't get that with a bolt gun, although I suppose you could have a panel of people pushing the button for a dry nitrogen chamber. The heart of the contradiction is wanting a state that kills people without any identifiable person killing anyone. Steve Biko explained the threefold Hegelian dialectic to me in I Write What I Like better than any number of pages of Hegel could, because he was communicating to a different audience and not being deliberately verbose. Which isn't to say that every academic book is useless, a book on organic chemistry that was completely accessible would likely not be useful, and vice versa, and I assume the same goes for the more advanced texts in social study, like Walter Benjamin and his sock fetish, but if you're trying for peasant liberation and your text can't be understood by the peasantry (who aren't thick, they just don't have the background reading and seminars) then your actual aim is Trot wanking. It's also also worth noting that everyone mad about Karen found 'Shaneequa' for all black women hilarious or at the bare minimum never spoke up when it was joked about. Also if women and LGBT folks don't want to join your social movement because you refuse to seriously tackle sexual harassment and worse within your upper ranks then you done hosed up. At this point I'm beginning to think that's a consequence of almost any form of hierarchy, at least that comes out of our current social environment. It affects anti-hierarchical movements too but at least they're more often prepared to gather around and talk about it rather than close ranks around the leadership.
