SevTech Ages is really loving good. I like mods that have tons the FTB stuff but the way SevTech ties it together with progression is just fantastic. Runs well on a Steam Deck.

I sunk a bunch of time into Blightfall in VR back in 2017 I think. What are more modpacks that are like good self-contained games?

If you somehow haven't played them then the entire Material Energy series is very good. Each one takes place in an entirely handcrafted structure where progression is done by slotting in different drives to spawn a max size area through AE. Scattered around are plenty of secrets, lore, and even a decent storyline.

Material Energy 5 is the most recent and while you don't need to play them in any particular order you'll obviously notice the QoL added over each successive release.

I haven't, thanks! I know very few mod packs by name.

The other day I had the solo minecraft mod / safari itch and checked our Private Game Servers board. I joined this this server using this pack called "FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.19". I am blown away by how quickly this particular pack loads and how well it runs so far.

I have played a bunch of tekkit or some kitchen sink packs 7-10 years back. 5 years ago I played a few weeks in Blightfell. 2-3 years ago I reached age 2 in SevTech Ages. Beat vanilla for the first time 1-2 years ago. I can build a smeltery easily but I'd say I'm not good or in touch with current modded MC. Have tried others over the years but generally I get boddied by modded mobs and lose interest.

I'm really interested in Colonies. It's like a worse version of some of the best parts of Dragon Quest Builders 2. My problem is that everything easily kills me and I am struggling to find or hang on to iron. I have found that the craftable supply camps and ships are good as a free source of certain materials like wool and books. The world is loaded with loot chests but it's tough to hang onto anything for long. If I keep a close eye on the sky a sleeping bag helps keep me and the citizens alive. As soon as I finished the walls and torches, a lightning elemental or something flew in to kill me with lightning bolts and enlightenment. It was a bit funny, and I would rather overcome these challenges some day rather than disable them.

Any early-game survival tips or beginner item farm hints for a modded world?

If it says you se a home, "/home" will teleport you to thhe place you /sethome, and /back will teleport you back where you were when you used /home, so you can drop off loot much more easily. If you're a fast enough typer you can escape danger this way, too.

Also, make a lot of charcoal to make torches and press F7 and place torches around your house until there's no yellow X anywhere nearby so there's nowhere unlit enough monsters can spawn at night.

Does it have a quest book? If there is, it should be in the top left when you open your inventory, that can help you get started by providing directions and some rewards.

Thanks a lot for the charcoal tip. Big help. I forgot to try /sethome /home and /back. That particular server got pulled which is probably best for my poor citizens. Time for a new one where I'll hoard resources before struggling with a colony this time. My new seed starts next to a giant above-ground dungeon which is a great start.

This pack doesn't have a quest book. The mods have their own books and there's something called Akashic Tome to collect them into one book. There are achievements to aim for. It seems the intended experience is to watch a YouTuber do a Let's Play and follow along. Not really my thing, but I'm otherwise adoring the pack.

Now I'm consider how much cheating I want to do. I had forgotten how much work it is to set up ME storage from zero, and how much I hate corpse running and mobs ruining machines. But overcoming that stuff without handing myself items is more rewarding. For the start I've disabled dropping items on death, advancing time, and phantoms.

Jesus I had forgotten how long everything takes to get started in modded MC. Each mod's book or wiki has a helpful Getting Started, but it's days of collecting or teching to specific materials to get some benefit out of any. Not that I'm expecting to launch a spaceship or build a nuclear reactor overnight.

Create is exceptional in that it adds tools that are immediately useful and accessible without being broken.

Colonies is fantastic, but it's very slow to setup with low-stat starter colonists and the amount of materials it requires. No bonsai trees or planter-hopper things that I've found yet. Storage for construction materials is also irksome at builder level one. I can not imagine forestry and mining will produce enough material to really help construction.
The colonists have surprisingly good pathfinding and can navigate ladders and steep corners. Now building inside and on top the above-ground dungeon.

There are still so many systems and guide books I haven't dabbled with yet. I'd like to get further into Ars before diving into the many other magic mods.

I think maybe 1.19 is why performance is so good with this mod pack. Probably the first pack for 1.19 I've tried.

FYI for anyone using PolyMC still for some godawful reason -- they removed the check for whether or not you have a legal version of minecraft, so it's effectively a pirate launcher now. Recommend moving to https://prismlauncher.org/ , which is also a multimc clone. As a bonus, it takes care of configuring the patches needed to run GTNH on java 17+ for you, which is handy.

On Steam Deck, Mine Together and Essential, both ways to do multiplayer without a server host, just don't work in GDLauncher.
Prism is the way to go, but as of 7.x it doesn't have FTB modpacks anymore.
For our specific use case, I had to get the last Prism 6.x and copy over a jdk folder because it wouldn't get or auto-detect one correctly.
Something about the default settings or this configuration makes certain menus crash where they didn't in GDL, for example the Minecolonies menu when you're picking a different building theme. Higher resolution makes it less crashy, but I'm still not as happy with Prism as I was with GDL. Tried to get the settings between the two 1:1, but either I'm overlooking something or it just isn't as stable for this version or setup.

People in the Discords for Essential and Prism we're both jerkasses about it.

We have been having a really fun time with the Direwolf20 pack for 1.19.2. I've said it before but the stability of heavily modded MC in this version and era is so much smoother and stabler than my past experiences. It started by wanting to get into MineColonies, and that is still a goal. Automating building materials and collecting fees for new citizens derailed into exploring, building, and automating. We were a bit disatisfied with the pack and have been adding to it, eventually regenerating the overworld. I'll say a bit about what we liked and added.

It doesn't have a main quest book, but you can craft the individual mod books, put them in Akashic Tome, and go through them if you have the patience. We don't, so there has been some struggle marked by huge milestones in discovering OP parts of the pack. For example, noticing CobbleForDays made it trivial to just have a full compacting drawer anywhere that that cobble might be useful. Figuring out the builder block + shape card had us leveling mountains pretty quickly. These kinds of leaps in progress have defined our playthrough, and it always feels like there's a new broken tool or spell around the corner, waiting to be found in a book, high-end loot chest, or JEI.

The new structures and dungeons added by YUNG's and When Dungeon's Arise are a favorite. Combined with Oh the Biomes You'll Go and Lootr, exploring the world is fresh and rewarding. But it was always the same mobs which, once fully geared, were not as interesting anymore. Looking at an explorer's compass we realized we had seen most overworld structures. We wanted this to be better and added mods in that direction. Amazingly, the game is still very stable for us.

Gobber seems out of place in the pack. It includes blocks that you can mine for food and a tier of ore beyond Netherite. This actually fit in better after the mods we added, which include a couple other new endgame ores. I could go on about some of the good QoL mods in the pack, or SilentGear and the different enchanting system, but we're still discovering. Right now we're exploring the Unusual End and automating steel.

Mods we added:

QoL:
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/botany-pots
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/botany-pots-tiers
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/botany-trees
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/falling-tree

Automating wood and farming is possible in Create with cool moving structures, and Industrial Forgoeing in a familiar way. We wanted it easier and more compact.

Mobs:

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/alexs-mobs
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/alexs-delight
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/mm-moogs-mobs/

Sorting items from the mob farm is a bigger pain, but the new enemies and huge variety of wild animals add a lot to the fun. Some things are really dangerous.

Biomes:
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/terralith
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/biomes-o-plenty
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/expanded-ecosphere/

Thanks to TerraBlender these mods play nicely with Oh The Biomes You'll Go. Hundreds of new biomes. Even the less unique new ones are a novelty.

Structures / Exploration:

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/galosphereGalosphere
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/official-divinerpg

Some of these also have new bosses, which are a treat. Discovery is a favorite part of this modpack, and these additions improve it tremendously. We didn't want to just switch to ATM or something, and we only added one thing outside this philosophy:

Guns:
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/mrcrayfishs-gun-mod
The pack already has a bad minigun and a cumbersome railgun. The guns and ammo in this mod are easy to make, well animated, enchantable, dyable, not too cheap, and just fun to use. Maybe a little OP.

Incredible write-up Xun. It is never enough RAM for me. You can also do the server on another computer you have or a cloud computer. That's not even as nerd poo poo as port forwarding and mac address filtering.

For a lot of mod packs with friends you can add essential or MineTogether Connect to just join a friend's single player world like a server. The former adds real money dlc and the latter didn't work last time I tried it.
I think Shadow0 needs to do the server though, and ram probably won't be an issue with that modpack.

For a room full of like vanilla chests you could use a storage scanner. Has a 3x3 crafting grid and you can just hit the + when searching in JEI. Needs power but no cables. Max range of 22 blocks I think. It would be incredible if it weren't so finicky.

I'm currently using a wireless crafting grid from Refined Storage. Only works with Refined Storage's storage I think. You could upgrade the wireless transmitter to go e it more range, I finite range, or work across dimensions.

Just creative mode? Maybe All The Mods 8.
For learning modded Minecraft I'd normally say something like FTB Academy or FTB University.

Without direction or a quest book in the mod pack it's easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated as an adult, let alone at 7. Which makes Direwolf20 is either a great or a terrible suggestion. If they're already watching that guy and following along it could good, but it has no quest book and wouldn't be the best to just drop the two of you in.

For your case I suggest using Essential or Mine Together for multiplayer. IME this excludes GDLauncher. The other option is setting up or renting a server, which is complicated but maybe fun if you like setting up tech.

It turns out if you make a zoo out of Alex's Mobs animals it does not run very well. Whales do NOT like to be in raised artificial aquariums.

We're probably saying goodbye to the mod. For every fantastic mob like seals and racoons there's something annoying like flies or birds caught on something invisible. We considered configuring it, but in the pursuit of performance and stability it makes more sense to cut it.

Thought I could deal with it for awhile and progressed though Minecolonies fairly far but up to Refined Storage stage now and any autocrafting is broken because of 2 stacks of each item.
Also cant shift click a recipe in on half the items, only crafted ones work, not dropped unless hand placed.
Just cant figure out which mod is causing it.
Searching shows this problem has been around since at least 2014 and some threads show a fix and some dont.
None work in my case since those offending mods arent in this pack.

For me this was epicweaponstats.toml. At the very top I changed "Weapon Attributes" to false. This fixed it for all items moving forward. For the ones that already had the issue, any inventory entries with "tag: 0 entries" had to have that line deleted.

Since upgrading from a launch model to an OLED Steam Deck, modded Minecraft has been unstable and prone to freezing or rebooting the whole system.

I would like to build a room in another dimension (compact machine, void dimension, w/e) and set it so that when any player joins the server they arrive there instead of where they logged out.

Is this possible on a Forge server? I found the essentialx plugin and a Fabric mod that can do this kind of stuff for the spawn area, but nothing for Forge.

So, question. What alternate dimension mods would people say are the best? A lot of them seem to have the problem that there's no reason to go there other than to see the stuff it has, or maybe one or two features you might want to use outside of it. Just little self-contained things with no bearing on anything else going on.

Most dimension mods I've found feel like they're meant to be a self-contained experience following vanilla end-game. Like they're nice on their own but don't integrate well into packs wrt power scaling unless they lock you into their own gear or something.

Divine RPG was one of my favorites. Cool new enemies, lots of items, a few different dimensions with large bosses. Each dimension has an ore you need to get the next tier of gear and portal.

There is some Stargate mod where you hop dimensions and it adds some overworld stuff.

The Aether has been updated for modern MC versions.

Twilight Forest and Blue Sky are both neat once. Those lock you into their progression systems. TF is famously unfinished but has the uncrafting table.

Ad Astra has you build rockets and go to planets in space. There are mods for this mod like Star Wars planets and lightsabers.

I would not really suggest Dimensional Doors, it's boring and ugly imo. There are dimensions for utility like mining dimensions, void dimensions, compact machines, pocket dimensions etc.
