So I just got myself a copy of The Futurist Cookbook, published in 1932. It's a collection of food theories and recipes from the Italian Futurist movement founded by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. ...

Just want to call out this bit in particular:

quote:

The Italian Sea, Mediterranean Salad and Chickenfiat, the eighth, ninth and tenth dishes are served at the same time. Note particularly the last named dish, devised by Diulgheroff. One takes a good-sized chicken and cooks it in two stages: first boiled, then roasted. A capacious cavity is dug out of the shoulder of the bird, within which one places a handful of little ball-bearings made of mild steel. On to the rear part of the bird one sews in three slices a raw cocks-comb. The sculpture thus prepared goes into the oven for about ten minutes. When the flesh has fully absorbed the flavour of the mild steel balls, the chicken is served with a garnish of whipped cream.

Chicken flavored with ball bearings :psyduck:

Speaking of weird chip flavors, my local supermarket had these:

I got a tube and they're OK. If I had to describe the taste I would say it's very reminiscent of movie theater popcorn drenched in that fake "butter", though sweeter than you'd ever get movie theater popcorn, with a definite underlying taste of potato from the actual chip.

In the latest video from emmymade she was sponsored by a company that sells Wagyu beef and decided to use it in a casserole hotdish:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POJYlts2W1o

Like, drat, the whole point of a hotdish is to take cheap ingredients and combine them into a homogenous sludge (usually bound in some form of Campbell's condensed soup) so you don't really taste any of the individual components. You don't use good beef in one. :psyduck:

Where does adding cream cheese to alfredo sauce fall on the Italian food wrath scale?

My mom is overall a pretty decent cook, but her "alfredo sauce" is definitely not one of her better recipes: combine equal parts sour cream and cream cheese. I'm not one who is a stickler for authentic food but even I know that is definitely not alfredo sauce.

Re: cheese on ramen, when my brother's Korean wife makes Army Soup (which is ramen noodles with kimchi and various meats in a spicy broth, served over rice) we add a slice of Muenster cheese on top of the rice which provides a nice creamy contrast to the broth. So I can totally see American cheese working with plain ramen.

Like the sort of stuff you can is solid masses of staple foods to keep you alive when you are miles from civilization, not fuckin... patisserie or whatever.

They put the dough in the cans and you bake it at home.

The constant calls for engagement, the narrator having the slightly off cadence of TTS, combining grams with teaspoons, plus the absolute :psyduck: that is the recipe, all make that video feel like an alien conducting some kind of experiment on humans.

What's weird about combining grams with teaspoons? If a recipe calls for 1/2 tsp of something I'm going to use a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon rather than try to weigh out 2.5g of spice on my kitchen scales.

In theory anyway. In practice I just put the right amount in because I know what a teaspoon of stuff looks like.

I would have expected mL instead (1 tsp is (depending on where you live) either approximately or exactly 5 mL). As an American I would expect the recipe to either consistently use metric (grams/mL) or customary units (pounds/ounces/teaspoons). Although considering that the teaspoon is used as a unit in some other English-speaking counties maybe I shouldn't be surprised.
