There's multiple places on the internet that treat the very name of the game as a curse word and refer to only as "that wizard game" and that's just absolutely ridiculous. Dragon Quest Treasures is now on Steam. i gave it a 7/10 last year, it ended up near the bottom of my top 50, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's just a bit unspectacular and looks like a budget game

You play as one of two kids who have been isekaied to floating islands full of treasure, and you recruit monsters to help you find them. There's no turn-based combat and you don't even hack and slash in this. Instead you have a support slingshot while your monsters fight ahead of you, which can do minor damage to enemies or can buff/debuff and heal depending on what you're shooting out of them.

You basically set out on an expedition to one of the islands, dig treasure up as you hot-or-cold to them, do a couple of side quests, then head back. The treasures are all references to past Dragon Quest games both mainline, spinoff, and even merch.

the game was made for the Switch and it shows, this is a budget-rear end looking game that would make Pokemon Arceus look AAA if it wasn't for the now stable resolution and framerate that a PC port can provide. ultimately though, the screenshots practically look like Yuzu screenshots of the game so, they didn't really enhance the game for this port.

it's sort of a almost-baked idea that I think will be much better in a sequel, much like DQ Builders was. the fact that it's gotten a Steam release seems positive in that direction. for this first one, I'd wait for a sale.

It should be illegal to talk about this game and not mention the voice lines, which are constant and repetitive to the extreme. Every monster has like two voice lines which they will repeat every 5 seconds. It drove me utterly insane.

Or Erannorth Chronicles, kinda - sim decks are definitely an option, but there's a default minimum deck size of I wanna say 15 or 20 by default, and shrinking it is a rarely-available strategy, but increasing it is more common (and there's good, commonly-available legendary equipment in the first (?) expansion that requires a fat deck to make any use of)

Oh man you reminded me I got Erannorth Chronicles when it went on sale aaaaages ago with the intent of getting into it but took one look at the initial setup and noped out due to not really being in the mindset for that level of complexity at the time. Trying it now and after some initial confusion I realized the game is a lot more straightforward than it appears. I feel like it does itself a disservice in not having a smoother tutorial/onboarding experience. But I played enough on a blindly created human knight guy in the easiest mode to understand what's going on and am going to restart on the "slightly harder than easy" difficulty. There's something kinda wild about a roguelike deckbuilder that's structured more like an open world RPG.

Huh? It had controller support for me (although it didn't have proper button icons without a mod, lol). Also I just checked the wikis and counted, while 4 does have more characters than 3 with the DLC, it's not double, it's 10 more. 3 had 46, 4 has 56. Charitably 58 if you include Boundman and Snakeman. Because a handful of characters got cut between games too, including pre-timeskip versions of a couple of the Strawhats. And the pre-TS versions ARE different enough to be their own characters. Movesets are also a lot more simplified in PW4, the best part about PW3 was always the fact that it had two full combo trees per character, so there's less depth per character.

I can't speak to more than just my experience, but playing GE1 and 2 on PC a few years ago had no technical issues. Also, buying GE2 on Steam comes with GE1 automatically, they're a package deal.

As for which to play, I think I liked GE1 a bit more than 2 overall, but on mostly subjective factors. Like 2's cast felt like it leaned into a lot of them being "quirky" noticeably harder than 1 did, and I liked 1's more somber mood about the world as a result. The gameplay isn't super different between them, especially since they're both remakes on the same engine so a lot of QOL stuff got applied to both, but 2 does have some of its own extra features even so just because they're things that were introduced later in the storyline.

On one hand you're correct the GE1 plot tends a bit darker and moodier and since it's technically a later game in terms of release date it has some QoL features that you REALLY feel the lack of when moving to 2. On the other hand, in GE2 you eventually unlock a super mode that requires you to accomplish moderately difficult requirements during a fight (that you pick for yourself), has a lot of buildup and when it finally starts up it plays this insanely cheesy song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFkUPAbpqE4

So I still gotta give it up for GE2 in the end. Also I can't believe no one mentioned all three GE games have this absolutely insane bullet customization feature that lets you make your own crazy anime shot patterns. They will mostly suck worse than just shooting a normal bullet unless you follow a guide, but they can be SO FANCY.
