Yeah, the fire/ice instant kills are amazing and make me glad I'd horded plenty of fire and ice arrows by the time I started going to really cold and hot places.

Tetra is one of those cases where Zelda is much more interesting when she is actively being not Zelda and gets kidnapped the literal minute she turns into a princess, and in Skyward Sword she didn't leave much of an impression on me but that's probably not her fault when she's in the same game as Groose. Never played any of the handhelds so maybe Spirit Tracks Zelda is cool and I'm talking out of my rear end.

Too bad her character in BOTW is mostly just whining a lot with really bad voice acting. I would be more endeared to her if there were more memories like the frog one.

parallelodad posted:Are you saying Tetra or the spirit track or Skyward sword versions weren't? Tetra was A Character With Actual Characterization for roughly one half of one game before they shoved her in an underground box for the second half of that game, and then had her kidnapped in the first 5 minutes of the game and rescued in the last 5 minutes for the sequel. I remain somewhat salty about that fact, given that she was also basically the first Zelda to have any characterization that wasn't fully pegged at "lawful good" and (almost) wasn't just like "oh I guess I'm the reincarnation of Zelda welp okay" which is sort of amusing, given that this version of zelda was also on a bit of a "gently caress destiny" kick and the end result was the death of nearly everyone she loved and 100 years of darkness so I guess the moral of the story is "if you're born as the reincarnation of the avatar of a goddess suck it up buttercup, you don't get to choose to be a scientist instead"

The way it ends as is is just so much of a gently caress you to Zelda. I'm still fairly sure they meant to do the role reversal and just didn't finish. There's also this really unsubtle analogy about silent princess flowers only being able to grow and prosper in the wild and just withering and dying in controlled domestic conditions, so my impression was we're supposed to think things wouldn't have ended up as shittily if Zelda could've just become an engineering princess and figure out how to update the guardians' anti-Ganon firewalls or whatever.

He never spoke with it during the entire game, even though Zelda did at least twice. Memories specifically pointed to him not hearing it and the hero should be able to. Link gets relayed its message from the Deku Tree. Likewise, Zelda's power finally activates in a moment of Courage when she steps in front of Link after a lifetime spent praying to a goddess she couldn't hear. Rewatch the memories from the POV of role reversal between Zelda/Link.

Lol if you don't think not hearing Fi talk to you for the entire game wasn't an intentional thing after so many complained about her in Skyward Sword, and I'm glad of it But as to the "ease of stepping into the role", Zelda's journal does talk about it being stressful for Link, but (without having it open in front of me) I seem to recall that the issue for Link was more "people expect a lot out of him and meeting those expectations is stressful", not "people expect a lot out of him and he was totally unable to meet those expectations". He was working just as hard as Zelda but it was working out for him instead of being completely fruitless.

When the sword is pulled out in this game it is conspicuously quiet as its message is relayed through the Deku Tree. Would've been easy to have it talk if it could have. It was working out for him in that he looked the part and was fine with a sword, but after opening up to her and her realizing that he wasn't connecting with the sword in the same way she couldn't connect with her own power, that knighting ceremony was just as much for him as for her to try to jumpstart things.

The only character who exhibits any explicit connection to the Triforce in the whole game is Zelda, so you could just as well read the story as saying Zelda possesses the power of the completed Triforce, but she could only awaken it when she had need of all three parts.

while we're on story beats anybody else find it interesting how the legends basically don't mention the triforce by name anywhere in the game, and rather than talk the primary characters as a fated trio, the reincarnation myth as passed down in botw instead present them as a primal evil and the two destined to stop it ganon can barely even be described as human in this game which was kinda cool

Also I am pretty sure that Link got the final memory from the Master Sword itself and being connected with it and all that since it got the same memory filter at the start as all Link's own memories do. I think you're just kinda misinterpreting what's already there. Zelda's story is definitely about being forced into a role she doesn't fit while thriving in another, but it's just about everyone expecting her to be a magical princess when she has a gift for scholarly pursuits rather than the whole courage/wisdom thing since the game barely cares about the Triforce trifecta this time around.
