Turn-based games are never going to go anywhere, especially since as the strategy game audience (and the gamer demographic as a whole) gets older, they're more likely to go for games that give you time to think over games that require you to react quickly. Chess is a millenium-old favorite of old men for a reason.

Dead Money is definitely the most divisive of the DLCs, you either love it or hate it. For me the atmosphere and the fact that you need to make do with basic equipment (the beginning is always my favorite part in those games) had me really enjoying it for the most part. Honest Hearts on the other hand I found kind of dull.

Also sharing the name with a popular series a lot of people are already familiar with would more than make up for that particular "handicap" anyway.

e: Thinking back to FF7, that game was violent and lewd as poo poo. I'm just thinking of Sephiroth's massacre of Shinra headquarters which leaves dozens of bloody bodies everywhere. They'll have to carefully go around that to not get a mature rating.

I bet Remake won't include Cloud beating the poo poo out of Aeris while she's lying helplessly on the ground after the Temple of the Ancients goes pop. It's a weird game in that it's simultaneously both darker and goofier than most people seem to remember it being.

Of course ultimately there is only one scene that truly matters and will absolutely need to be included in it, which is Cloud being stripped by and taking a group bath with Mukki and his buddies.

Like straight up "punched in the face repeatedly in modern graphics"? That's not particularly common.

I disagree with CottonWolf though, I don't see how that scene would affect the game's rating as there are far bloodier parts in that game and there is zero reason why the gender of the person getting beaten would make any kind of difference when it comes to that. They might tone it down a bit to make it seem less brutal but it won't be because of ratings.

I think it's the whole context of the thing rather than the gender actually. A mentally ill/mind controlled character beating down their sympathetic ally while they don't fight back. It's just really dark.

It is, but while it might be more uncomfortable to watch it's unlikely that it'd affect the actual rating more than all the other violent and messed up stuff that happens in the game.

But like I said it's most likely going to be toned down a bit as it's hard to make it work the same way when you're trying to be realistic, although I hope they'll find at least some way to show the hosed up state Cloud is in.

Odds are practically 100% that if you're into JRPGs, regardless of your age, you've at the very least heard about that game.

It's better balanced and has some extra features but the gameplay itself is the exact same as in the original WL2. If it wasn't your thing back then, I don't see how DC would've change that.

To answer the original "what PSX rpg's were great" question, the answer is FF7, FF9, FFT, Parasite Eve, Xenogears (notice a trend?), BOF3, Suiko2, Tactics Ogre, Wild Arms, Saga Frontier... Having trouble thinking of others, but I'm sure there are plenty I never played.

Can't make that list without Vagrant Story in it.

:c00lbert:

I slightly prefer BoF 4 over 3, the dragon stuff was a lot better in 3 but the dungeons could really drag on in that game and I can't help but appreciate what a hilariously dark game 4 was, it's just a non-stop rollercoaster of depression.

Also while I recognize that it probably doesn't belong on that list, I'll always have a soft spot for Legend of Dragoon. Lavitz was a true bro.

I always say Vagrant Story is my favourite RPG (or sometimes Xenogears) but unfortunately it's a lot more fun to remember it than to actually play it nowadays. :/

I played and finished it about a year back and it's still a great game in my opinion, the only legit annoying thing about it is the fact that your container is saved on your memory card which makes transferring items for crafting a lot more tedious than it ought to be. That part aside I found that it has aged a lot better than most PS1 games, though it helped that I actually understood the affinity system this time around instead of ignoring the tutorial about it and plinking at bosses for 1 damage at a time.

Plus I love atmospheric games and that game oozes the stuff.

I really hope NIS sees success moving games to Steam, mostly because it would encourage other developers/publishers (Atlus :argh:) to do the same. Id kill to have all my SMT games nice and ordered in my Steam library versus spread out over 3 consoles and 2 handhelds.

For the most part JRPGs on Steam are probably profitable enough to make porting them worth it but at the same time I'd imagine they're not quite so profitable that it'd become a huge priority and platform of importance.

I think the timing is a bit unfortunate too since Japan's new enthusiasm to port stuff is happening simultaneously with Steam being flooded by tons of low-quality games which makes it harder for individual releases to stand out.

I got the PS3 release of SMT: Nocturne on a whim yesterday - holy poo poo it's really good. I'm just pumping points into strength right now, any specific build I should go for?

The most important thing is to make sure that between yourself and your demons you should try to cover as many elements and buffs/debuffs (and ways to remove them) as possible. It's a game where being prepared for anything is really important, the boss fights in Nocturne are no joke especially if you find yourself lacking the particular ability that makes them more manageable. Even if you go mostly Strength you should grab a few spells to avoid being a one-trick pony.

And like was mentioned, make sure to grab Focus since you get it very early on and if you discard it then you'll make things a lot more difficult for yourself. The game isn't exactly forthcoming with information about what abilities you get and at what level, in the case of Focus the matagama Kamudo teaches it and it requires level 23.

PB is generally considered one of the weaker titles since a lot of people don't like the way the combat works and it for the most part lacks the humor most of their other games have, although whether or not the latter is a pro or a con is obviously subjective.

It's not a bad game though, and the soundtrack is rad as always.

Speaking of Shadow Hearts can someone talk about the horror elements of it. I keep seeing talk about how it all went away after 2, but nothing specific. They are able to be specific about the goofy stuff like the Man Festival, Wolf Bouts, or collecting gay porn. It just makes it seem like it has always been a comedy series and that From the New World took it too far.

It's never had a serious horror element to it but there's a lot of pretty disturbing or otherwise real weird monster design and some pretty gory backgrounds, for example in the first Shadow Hearts pretty much the first area is a town where the streets are covered in blood and corpses and you fight the first real boss in the middle of thousands of piled skulls. There's also the traditional "doll house" sidequest which always has a darker atmosphere than most of the rest of the game.

I think it's more about the overall atmosphere that especially in the first game is often fairly bleak even though there's a ton of goofiness.
