itt post about things you like, sincerely

I really enjoyed playing Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP), cause of the music, writing, and characters, and that cool thing some RPGs do where NPCs have little mini arcs over the course of the game, even if the actual gameplay was kinda slow! :) It'll always suck the US never got EPP, though.

Also got fond memories of FE8, which I replayed recently and still liked, and getting Golden Sun TLA used at Gamestop for like, $10 and having a ton of fun too, even if it probably won't hold up now.

as someone who got stardew valley like a month ago on ios, it's a really nice chill time, but i feel like there could definitely be more cool secret stuff and mysteries a la early harvest moons! also little weeky variety tv shows like mechas and such!

1st its hidden behind a sidequest chain that has confusing progression requirements and no hint it leads to the end game. Upon unlocking the end game you will probably need to grind 20-40 levels on each character at minimum. Sure, you can beat it at 65 or so with a smart setup but theres a reason you dont.

You see the final content is a bossrush of rebeating more powerful versions of all 8 chapter 4 bosses followed by a two form final boss. There are no saves at anypoint in this, and the final boss requires you to beat each form with a different party of four so you must use all 8 characters and have them geared appropriately. Nothing forewarns you what the two phases do so put people or the wrong equipment on? Get bent, you need to do it all over again and it takes an hour or more.

Should you decide to do all this narratively you get a few pieces of written text vaguely explaining how the 8 stories overlap, even if some of the stories overlap is just "oh yeah this monster was a random byproduct of research" so its not like its a particulalry strong narrative hook and then like two lines of dialog from the sidequest giver saying "good job, nobody will know you did this". On beating the boss your reward in game is the final insult, an item that turns off random encounters.

that all sounds like the bad parts of endgames of old rpgs combined into one bad mess (iirc)... also, giving an item that would have been helpful earlier at the very end instead of like a fancy medal is just kind of ????

i've been playing collection of mana recently, and while ffa doesn't exactly have a super shakespearean plot and translation, plus the moment probably would have landed better if there was more development with the characters...

the fact that you gotta hit A to finish off amanda after she gets bit by medusa (which reminds me of zombie movies??) instead of it just being a cutscene + manually walk over to her afterwards hits pretty hard :(

i don't mind a story wanting to have some amount of emotional shock or w/e but ffa just throws around those kinds of scenes like candy and there's nothing approaching interesting payoff for any of it but the loving chocobo who gets turned into a robot

so far it's just been the character i mentioned that has it happen to her + it uncursed parrot bard lester, but maybe it happens moreso later in (never played ffa before)? i can see how it'd get a bit silly + tiresome after the like 4th time tho!

didn't paper mario ttyd have a character's implications they were trans removed from some tls of the script? that + some of the fe examples seems like a top down NoA/E mandate i guess??

oh yeah a goemon game got mentioned: i dunno much about the series but iirc the tled line had a much harsher slur used in a scene than the og line (which is uhhhh afaik 'newhalf' or smth?? tho its still a pretty bad trans "gag" no matter what) before it got changed in a patch, which imo is mostly for the better :)

'newhalf' is a harsh slur that is mostly used in porn and exploitative reality/variety shows. it literally means 'half man, half woman.' in that sense it's closer to 'shemale' than 'tranny' so i guess you could call that part of the translation an error, but saying it was a 'much harsher slur' isn't really true at all. regardless yelling at the translator and sending him death threats isn't really the way to resolve that.

It wasn't implications either, Vivian was explicitly trans in the Japanese version. Her sisters literally misgender her and use her dead name, she explains to Mario that she was 'born a boy but wants to be a girl,' Mario supports her, they beat up her sisters, the ending has them accept her gender identity and apologize for it. There's a few iffy spots (Goombella has a line where she goes 'she... he... it?' though I think there's a really brief dialogue scene you can get where Goombella apologizes) and it's very much written like the concept is something the viewer would have never heard of before, but for a Mario game from the early 2000s its fairly nice. I at least get why that was changed in translation, since Mario game in the early 2000s, but it's strange to be toning down gay stuff in a T-rated game in 2019.

aaah i see, thanks for the info about the term and mario! :)
i was under the impression that newhalf was wayyy less offensive as a term than the word that got used in its stead... personally to me it probably should have gotten rewritten in the tl (whenever i read a slur in a translated thing its always really jarring and like, a bad gut punch feeling), but i don't really envy anyone who had to finangle a translation out of that whole deal :ohdear:

and yeah, its really weird that that whole really cool element would be taken out in the eng (and uhh german too??) tls of ttyd and the fe examples. im really curious about why the changes got done and if its like, a nintendo branch getting pissy about queer stuff or some weird tl mandates or something??

oh right i just remembered that harvest moon ds cute took out the ability to "best friends" the 4 secret bachelorettes in the english version too!!

honestly it's not worth fixating on even for how bad it is alone because like half of goemon 3's jokes are along those lines. it's a ridiculously unfunny game. even in goemon 2 half of the jokes can be summarized as "goemon walks into the house, a beautiful woman is in the house... but then the beautiful woman uncovers her face and they've got five o clock shadow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

you'd have to heavily edit not only the text but some of the sprite work in those games to remove those jokes you're just not getting a version of goemon 2 and 3 that isn't filled with it

the impression i'm getting here is that goemon overall sounds kinda bad and not just that one scene, and 3 is the persona 4 of writing for uhh... action games??
