Does Quake 2 have any "must try" singleplayer mods? Anything on the scale of something like Arcane Dimensions for Q1?

Pretty much just looking for a reason to keep it installed, I haven't really dabbled in anything Q2 related in probably 20 years.

no

Humble doing a boomer shooter bundle that includes

Nightmare Reaper
Deadlink

Impaler
Graven
Wrath
and uh the citadel

I've never heard of Deadlink or Impaler.

I hope Graven and Wrath are good. The EA builds are fine but man, Wrath has been in development forever and it doesn't seem like its near the end. I feel bad for em, they made a mistake developing it the way they are.

too bad some of the games forgot to put a character doing the epic doomguy pose on their cover art

Every other weapon except the AR had its uses, but they were all situational while the pistol was the main workhorse. The plasma pistol charge shot had very strong tracking and was a guaranteed shield pop. The rocket launcher was the most reliable vehicle counter

The sniper does have a crosshair

Y'know, I've noticed a distinct lack of "tacticool" PvE FPSes that aren't Call of Duty or Battlefield. I guess Insurgency: Sandstorm has that (just brought that on sale), but sometimes I just wanna gun down multiple mooks with real (or real-adjacent) guns. Basically, I want a new Black. Or single-player Tarkov. Give me my gun porn.

Project MSX was awesome, and I'm sad the developer quit working on it because it became completely incompatible with later versions of GZDoom. There are so many great Doom mods that run the gamut these days, but that's a whole other conversation.

If you like the coop mode in sandstorm and want something a little more realistic, Ground Branch is a coop shooter modeled off raven shield/ghost recon. Full tacticool weapon customization and some stuff you don't see in many other games like options on how you hold the gun and canted sights.

Also you can still play Tribes 1 and 2 perfectly fine. There are free, preconfigured installers and everything. You just have to join an organized game or find the time when a public lobby fills up since like 200 people play them total.

every tribes game (and earthsiege/starsiege iirc) was released for free by the publisher like a decade ago so i odnt think it matters that there's "no legal way to buy them"

I dont see what nightdive slapping a $20 pricetag on a multiplayer only game and putting it on Steam will do for it. It sure didn't work for Quake Live. Heck as far as Steam itself helping, the latest Tribes-like was free to play on there and died out in less than a month.

really? i was pretty disappointed. none of it feels right, especially the skiing

Squeezy Farm
Jun 16, 2009
the skiing feels "fake". you get a free sprint boost when you start it and you latch on to the ground. like, if you ski along the side of a hill you dont curve with the slope at all--you just stick to the terrain and go straight. the jets are weak and dont have much energy so low-speed disk duels aren't as interesting either and simple things like jetting up to a flag stand are annoying because you dont get much height

Jun 16, 2009

Jehde posted:

It sounds like you didn't play this week's playtest.

They overhauled the skiing and it works as expected now. They also added an option to let you choose how much lateral jet thrust you want as a trade off of vertical thrust. This is still a very early alpha, so they still have a lot of missing features to implement yet. But so far they're improving the things I want addressed. The development trajectory is pretty promising.

Tribes is back and it rules.

I only played this one. the skiing feels terrible and jet thrust isn't something you should have to change in the settings.

i know itll only get a quarter of tribes 3s eventual player base but midair 2 is how I expect tribes to feel

It has a pacing issue, but by hub 3 you will have arguably too many weapons and enough mean enemies to make fights frantic.

The maps are at least twice as long as most quake campaign maps, maybe even 3 times as long sometimes, so each hub is 2-3 times longer than an equivalent quake episode. With levels in any order, the toolset and enemy mix can only tier up roughly every 10-15 quake equivalent maps which contributes a lot to the issues.

i was pretty bored in the first episode but 2 definitely kicks it up. not super hard yet but i'm at least dying occasionally.

my major annoyance atm is the enemy pathfinding is weird and so many fights end up with the cacodemon equivalents getting stuck somewhere.

and the blade movement is fun but on Hard your health gets chewed through quickly and most enemies get a hit in if you go full melee. the glide move giving super armor or health leech would open up more effective strategies with it. i want it to be effective to fly through the eyeball monster's projectiles and stab it. instead, it's usually better to sit back and snipe with fangs/handgun

Squeezy Farm
Jun 16, 2009
yeah the ghast equivalent is not fun to fight. they get stuck in corners and are best sniped with the pistol.

you do get a railgun later which helps with deleting some of the larger enemies (e.g., the cacodemons die to rail + shotgun blast)
