At this point, the only reason I'm not anticipating Spring Breakers is Harmony Korine's name being attached. "Cautiously Pessimistic" is probably the best way to describe it.

EDIT: poo poo, new page. Have a couple Oblivion posters that I don't believe have been posted yet.

I liked the initial parts of the trailer but it looks like it very quickly turns into a standard shoot 'em up. That's the problem with what passes for sci fi sometimes: they try to establish a strange, alien setting and then quickly fill it up with the usual bullshit.

I have to agree. Oblivion has an interesting (if not particularly original) setting, and I'd like it to be more than just "Pew pew pew, space bugs".

Gotta say though, when I saw the trailer in theaters (I believe it was before Les Miserables) they played it right after the trailer to After Earth, and Oblivion does look better than that one. And I had to giggle a bit when I noticed that they didn't mention M. Night Shyamalan's name once in the After Earth trailer.

Eh, as long as the text itself isn't changed, I don't really have much of a problem with tie-in book covers. Drop the "Bella and Edward" crap, and those Wuthering Heights covers wouldn't be that bad.

And let's be honest here, most reprints of classic books have terrible covers, the last one that I've looked at and thought "hey, that's pretty cool" was Penguin's most recent reprint of 1984.

Written by David Zucker and Pat Proft (Hot Shots, The Naked Gun films, Police Academy) and it's directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother, Soul Men).

These people have talent, what are they doing working on a Scary Movie sequel?

Also, discussing Scary Movie Series continuity and canon is pretty funny.

And out of all the parody movies coming out this year, the only one that looks like it's going to be any decent is The World's End.

Based on the trailer and this poster, they are really trying to make it seem like 'Drive' or some gritty drama with intense action scenes.
After seeing the film, oh boy, people are in for a treat. Not a tasty one with those expectations. The backlash could be worse than with the people who thought Drive was going to be like Fast and The Furious. drat.

Would you still recommend it on the catch that it's nothing like the marketing?

Eh, can't be worse than the last few actual Die Hard movies.

Kush posted:

Sure. I appreciated what the director was trying to do with the triptych form but the last act wasn't as compelling as it should have been. It is kind of heavy and slowburn, but at least it is that with great actors, tense scenes and nice cinematography. The score is pretty good too, it gives the film a really unique feel at times, with the sweet piano theme from the trailer appearing at certain moments.
It's hard to talk about the film in depth without spoiling some major stuff so I recommend seeing it without any info beyond the trailer.

Cool. I've really been looking forward to this one, so just as long as it doesn't suck.

On the subject of Ghibli, I've always loved the cover for Disney's release of Whisper of the Heart.

Even though a scene like that doesn't actually happen in the film, it does a great job setting the tone for the movie. And it probably doesn't hurt that Whisper is my favorite Ghibli film.

Tarentino has a pretty apt knowledge of Australian Oz-Spolitation films as he kept getting copies of them when working in a video store and being completely blown away by films where women were tied naked to the front of moving cars.
The background to half of Australia's film industry is we got an R rating in the 70's, went balls and tits out with making as many grindhouse films as we could, and then Star Wars and Jaws came along and we had no chance in hell to compete against blockbusters during the 80's and have reverted to doing dramas about mid-life crisis.

There's a documentary called Not Quite Hollywood that's all about the "ozspolitation" movies of the 70s and 80s, and Tarantino is one of the major figures interviewed. He's so enthusiastic about these movies that it's almost adorable. He's like a puppy :3:
