I don't really know cars of this (apparent) era but I found this in my phone and was wondering what it was. Let me know if I need to post it in the other thread and/or commit honorable sudoku.

Disgruntled Bovine posted:Considering how strict they are in other respects, the poo poo the UK allows on public roads is pretty amazing. I went to a car show in Virginia that included a Stanley Steamer the owner had driven to the show. He said he periodically had to pull into a neighborhood, knock on a random door, and say "hey can I use your hose to fill up my car?" The sound the steam engine made was so drat cool.

drgitlin posted:My wife showed me that feature recently and it blew my mind (as well as scaring me a bit). When I read about it I tried "tank" and it gave me all my model tanks and the reference photos I'd saved. The only ones left out had busy camo, like a Hetzer with ambush pattern. A few updates later it found all of them. I feel like this has implications for the military.

Humbug posted:A lot of people turn them off too early though. Here in Norway, the police go out in the media every year telling people to not turn them off when oncoming traffic is miles away, and that they have and will give fines for switching too early to low beams. When the two light pictures overlap or about 200 yards is the rule drilled in at my driver ed, assuming no extra high beams. Is it common in European countries to be legally required to use high beams?

I was born in 87. By the time I even started noticing cars the only folks who had 80s models were poor people and olds. So that's what I associate the styling with. Like, even I can tell the Celica is something different from the econoboxes, and I'm not talking about the really exotic stuff, but visually the Celica does literally nothing for me. I don't hate it or anything, it just never would have occurred to me it's someone's dream car. um excuse me posted:I don't remember the source, but I once heard that all turbochargers are superchargers but not all superchargers are turbochargers. Turbocharger as a term is a compound word from turbine supercharger. Since the presence of a turbine is needed to satisfy the turbo definition, anything electrically driven would have to be a supercharger. Turbos were indeed originally called turbine superchargers. You can find docs from WW2 that get super confusing because they talk about, eg, the Merlin being "supercharged."

I watched Car with a friend last night, the one with a killer car. It was the second film (after I Let You In, which I highly recommend) and we maybe should have called it quits even if it weren't for the wine, beer, whisky, and weed. We'd both doze off during the interminable 70s dialog then wake up for the car murder, thanks to the sudden noises, engine roar, murderous honking, etc. It's a hell of a way to watch a movie

track day bro! posted:It doesn't matter what time it is in London, it's still the slowest city in the world to drive in. Handily, Wikipedia has a list for this. By city proper population, London is 29 out of the 81 listed. By metro area pop, it's 14. By 2018 UN estimate, whatever that means, it's 37. By area, it's 31. Fun facts: population density for London proper is 5,614 per square km. For Paris, it's 20,460. Mumbai is 20,694. For Manila, 41,399.
