Doesn't our supposedly left-wing media deserve some share of the blame for not fighting the Fox News bandwagon? I mean, who's the leftest person on national TV right now? Maddow? Olberman? As far as I can tell they're both capitalists.

The question I find myself asking is whether this disunity is harmful in the long run. It establishes leftists (which I'm using here as a blanket term for greens, LGBT-rights activists, feminists, minority-rights activists, labor unionists, socialized healthcarists, blac bloc anarchists and reds--gently caress, it's a big tent) as people of conscience, so dedicated to their cause that they ignore all others, even those related to their own struggle, whereas rightists tend to circle the wagons-thinking and more importantly voting in lockstep. Look at the horseporn from the last few pages! If we on the political left found someone like that we'd drop them, not find a new hero.

But the fact that we just can't seem to get along makes us less vulnerable to becoming an echo chamber. I'm not saying invulnerable. I've got cousins who are knee-jerk crystal-healing loons, but I'll side with 'em when I agree with them, and they'll do the same for me when my pet issues come up. Meanwhile, my Idaho relatives are strongly pro-labor and deeply racist, so I'll side with them on labor issues while calling them on their bullshit when they start insulting Latinos.

Among the right wing, it seems that one slip from dogma earns you the wholesale hate of the whole conservative machine.

We (leftists) get along fine. Your post is a little confusing.

You seem to be claiming the left is more tolerant, claim "we don;t get along" and then go on to point out ways you find to get along with other left thinking people even if their cause is not aligned with yours. You also seem to be arguing that leftists are more narrow in their political and social aims, which I think is untrue. I think what you're trying to say, if I read your post right, that the left is more diverse and splintered in their priorities; in the way that a lot of my liberal friends are, say, hardcore vegetarians but still come to the parties we throw even though we serve meat, but that contradicts your assertion that leftists champion their pet cause(s) "that they ignore all others."

Since the right is so much more absolute, cut and dried, authoritarian and black and white in their worldview, their message(s) are more easily and (sometimes) cleverly boiled down into bumper sticker slogans, t-shirts and soundbites, but that doesn't make them more correct or stronger as a unit. One of thier more popular ones is "There's What's Right, Then There's What's Left", which about sums it up. There's more people "left" once you've established that the only way to be "right" is guns, Jesus and money.

The right wing is eating itself as we speak.

Anecdotal: I know a woman whose B-list son died in unpleasant circumstances. Self-inflicted gunshot wound to the heart combined with a long history of self-destructive behavior. She spent years trying to prove that he'd been murdered--she'd become convinced of that after reading one of the celebrity gossip rags they sell in supermarkets. When the police closed the case, she hired a PI, who apparently had enough principle to drop her case or whatever. She went through a series of increasingly-dodgy investigators before resorting to psychics and ghost-whisperers. Now she just drinks waaaay too much wine and goes in for whatever new-agey crystal-healing stuff is in vogue at any given time. And even getting to that level of relative sanity took her years.

Public scrutiny couldn't make that situation any better, so I worry for Ms. Smith. She might have gone a little loopy on her own but the media frenzy surrounding things is only gonna make it worse. And until she gets too crazy and the media drops her, she doesn't have any real chance of recovery.

Even if the first week was like that(and it hasn't been), try and give it a chance. It's really tiresome to see so many people making GBS threads all over the first ray of sunshine in a stormy sky of bullshit just to get a little hipster cred for how "in the know" they are.

Yeah, we will all miss the AJE stream. But calm the gently caress down and give it time.

I've heard AJAM's coverage is pretty decent if more domestic than most of Al Jazeera's stuff, but the frustrating part for me personally is that not a single provider in my area carries it and now I can't even watch the AJE stream; I get the impression that this is a problem for a decent percentage of AJE's previous American viewership.

That kind of (oh god gonna bust out the two-bit words) generational triumphalism has been a problem for the left for god knows how long now. It's easy to sympathize with transpeople on the bathroom thing: I had to use a women's room once and it kinda sucked. It was at a McDonald's in the middle of the Nevada desert and the men's room was out of order. I a friend stand outside and then had the fastest, most unpleasant poo poo of my life, half-assed washing my hands, and booked it out of there. The whole thing felt just so goddamn uncomfortable, like I was gonna get arrested for a sex crime any minute or something - like, the whole time there was just this intense feeling of being in the wrong place. New York City/New York State law allows you to smoke in private businesses that aren't like open to the public. And a set inside the Fox News studios is almost certainly not "open to the public" in a way that would make it a violation.

Then again like, it's very difficult to legally smoke normal cigarettes on Broadway theater stages because of having so much of an audience, so if any of the studio complex in the building is set up for live audiences it could be illegal.

I don't claim to know the laws of New York but that thing is not a real cigarette. It's one of those stupid ciggavape things and it's not a bad idea to hold it close to the "cherry", because the part that gets hot is actually near the joint between the main body of the vape and the filter. Then again the part that heats up only gets kinda warm, not hot, unless you're smoking like a chimney. The little light at the end is an LED so it never really heats up.

In conclusion hannity, while definitely a stupid man, and holding and sucking on a stupid object, may not be holding said stupid object in a stupid way.
