Woah, that's a pretty big wall of spoilered speculation! Lemme give my own take. (If I don't address a point, assume that I didn't have anything interesting to say about it.)

  • You're completely right that he completely missed the point on this leap and didn't really look for the cause.
  • I don't really think that he's rerun this all before. He seemed to be recalling things in the moment that he'd forgotten before. Yes, memory can be unreliable and all that, but I'm not sure it's going that direction.
  • There's definitely something odd going on with Kayo. I kinda suspected she might be a time traveller, too. But she doesn't seem to be making efforts to change anything, so I don't know why she would've time travelled. Maybe there's something else going on with her to explain the oddity.
  • I dunno about Ken'ya. He does seem like a pretty mature kid, but there isn't the degree of oddness associated with him that there was with Kayo.
  • I did notice the teacher's facial similarity... But I'm not sure how much there's to that. "Sketchy" is an awfully vague description. Also, I can't think of any reason for Satoru's mother to have a negative reaction to his face like she did to the kidnapper's face. That's definitely significant.
  • As for Yuuki, the lolicon porn is definitely suspicious, but it might've been presented as a red herring that explains why the police settled on Yuuki and didn't really look for another culprit. It's not like Japan has a shortage of lolicons.
  • Hitomi was specifically noted as feminine looking for a boy. That might explain it. Plus, two out of three being ten years old honestly isn't a very large sample size to draw patterns from.
  • The third girl: actually, two apparently unrelated out of four known victims or would-be victims (remember the attempted kidnapping Satoru's mother foiled) and Satoru himself at that time notes the kidnapper's likely done this with who knows how many kids.
  • Interesting speculation about Katagiri. Not sure what else to say about it. I think we might need to see more.
  • Yeah, I think a more thorough perusal of the anthology might provide enlightening (and honestly Satoru's kinda assuming when he thinks Ken'ya was referring to one of two specific entries).
  • I feel like there're some very important pieces we're missing here, in part because of Satoru's very narrow focus on saving Kayo without addressing the underlying issue of "there's a guy kidnapping kids".

I think the scanslator only wants to work from tankobons, which come out less often and are expensive.
Tankobons generally have better printing quality (which translates into better scans) and often have extras that weren't in the magazines. Plus I've actually seen an instance of the art getting touched up from the magazine edition to the tankobon edition, though that doesn't seem necessarily that common? Plus in some cases they can be easier to get than all the magazines a work appears in.

So, yeah, some scanlators work exclusively from tankobons.

"Long ago had aspirations of being toilet paper" sounds about right for magazine quality paper. Really, they're made to be disposable, while tankoubon're made to be colllected. In general, it all depends on scanlator priorities. Some of them go for quick releases while others focus on quality above all. Many fall somewhere in the middle. The more popular stuff tends to get the rapid-fire releases while those working on more obscure titles often go at their own paces.

Wait, so that scanslating group kisu isn't the people who made the translations? It's kind of lovely that they'd take the credit for work that isn't their own.

What's even stranger is that the new chapters on Batoto are all gone. You can find them all on kissmanga, as well as the other manga hosting websites.

Not so surprising those chapters're gone if they just slapped their own names on the Jmanga rips. Batato's more strict than the other hosting sites about stuff like that.

I don't know where else to ask this, as there's not a "general" thread or anything.

Do people read Junji Ito's Uzumaki because they think it's scary or because they think it's hilarious? I started reading it for for the first time last night and all I could think was "this is silly." Is that kind of reaction expected?

Like I said, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask (this forum has so few threads!) and I checked and Uzumaki was apparently serialized in some seinen mag so it kinda counts I guesss. It's just hard to gauge what tone it's going for and what kind of reaction I'm supposed to have.

Junji Ito's horror tends to be pretty wacko. It's, depending on the reader, hilariously weird or terrifyingly bizarre (or both). He doesn't really hold back--you're in for a crazy ride.

Tokyo Ghoul is seinin. A quick check of its category labels on other sites confirms that. You can also find it on Batoto here. And I suggest getting used to the art styles you can't stand, but I know everyone can have their own little quirks. For example, I sometimes have a hard time getting into Tezuka, though I've really enjoyed some of his works.

Most of what I would recommend's covered in this thread, but there's always Death Sweeper if you don't mind general grossness (it's about a business that cleans up heavily rotted dead body remnants).

This is kinda an odd and random pick, but there're Kutsuzure Sensen and Gun and Stamps. I don't recall thsoe being discussed in this thread. They're both filled with military geekiness, black humor, and cute character designs. Kutsuzure Sensen's set in WWII and is about a witch who gets recruited into the Russian army (with plenty of inherent black humor), while Gun and Stamps is about a rather by-the-book logistics officer's misadventures in an alternative history setting. I don't know if they'd be to people's tastes, but I like them for the black humor I keep talking about.

this would make sense...if not for the fact that there are still some similar things to our world that don't make sense, like the police/army/whatever having the same kind of uniforms. There's no need to have that when you don't actually need protection from bullets and things.
The first thing that comes to mind is protection against disabling but not lethal injuries. There's already a certain doctrine stated by a real-life person that states it's better to cripple enemy soldiers than kill them, because then they become a burden to their own side. Likewise while they can just put a bullet in themselves, it's harder if they're suffering shock while slowly bleeding out. And that'd give the enemy more time to act.

But wouldn't the only burden be "putting a bullet in the head of the disabled person"?
I was only citing that as a real-world example of what I'm talking about. And not being disabled in the first place means they don't have to waste time and bullets doing that. Plus they aren't down one in a heated situation where there might not be much time to spare for getting to and shooting the disabled.

Fairly minor correction: the creator is a woman (which might go a way toward explaining her fantastic female characters--Noa's easily my fave Dorohedoro character).

I honestly think it may also have to do with the fact that whoever took over translating the series is Duwang level bad

I pretty much stick exclusively to Twisted Hel Scans's releases for that reason. Which means I'm behind by some chapters, but I don't have to deal with those other groups' lovely translations (and it's not as if Twisted Hel actually dropped the chapters, there're just random people leaping ahead of them and releasing often literally random chapters).

That said, while I haven't found Tokyo Ghoul bad enough for me to drop it yet, there are better series out there and if it came down to a choice between keeping up on it and keeping up on those other series, I'd pick the other series in a heatbeat. I might just make this choice eventually.

2 months honestly isn't that much, certainly not long enough to say that it's been abandoned. Scanalators' release paces can vary widely based on assorted factors, and some are just slower than others. It's a hobby after all.

In fact, looking at their release dates on Mangaupdates, a few months between releases isn't unheard for them. Plus there're good odds it's a monthly series anyway.

But it's got solid enough characterization that DQV knowledge probably isn't really necessary. (It manages to make the tale of a bum who does nothing but build bonfires interesting and insightful.)

Yeah, the manga seems to be actually pointing out questions like that--the fat vector outright questioned why the immortal world had guns just like his non-immortal world.

Inside Mari really needs to be weekly to justify the rather plodding pace. Don't get me wrong, I like how Oshimi focuses on the subtleties of characters' expressions, but I felt like not even Flowers of Evil had so much emphasis put into it. Then again, that story did meander around a lot during its final arc.

Makes me wonder if he has any idea on how to actually wrap up the story, seeing as there's really only one plot point worth discussing, and it almost feels like the meandering is him trying desperately to create new conflict opportunities. I can't believe I'm asking for flashbacks, but maybe some into the MC's old life would be a way to handle this. Assuming of course the theory that Mari has DID isn't accurate.

It does seem to have a slow pacing. And at this point I'm pretty much on the fence about what's actually going on, though I'll say that it definitely isn't DID, though it could be something else, like dissociative fugue which was brought up in a previous discussion of this.

There are some strong similarities in this flashback to the stories told about the actual historical Gautama Buddha. Broadly, his circumstances were similarly privileged, and similarly he got a rude shock that caused him to abandon that privileged lifestyle to seek enlightenment. However, the details in this manga definitely differ, and it's very much an alternative take on Gautama, though an interesting one. I'll note also, we have little info about Gautama Buddha's life outside legends. Also, the name of King Jakata seems to be taken from the name of a collection of tales about the Buddha's past lives, the Jakatas.
