Bringing it back to roguelikes, sort of, I always thought ADOM had amazing world building and was conceptually cool but the mechanics were brutal. Incidentally, what Black August did, converting the setting into a tabletop rpg, was really, really cool.

Brigador is a rather fun game, but I wouldn't even call it a roguelite. If you die you go back to the mission select screen is the full of it; all the maps are static, though there are allot of them, and enemy placement/loadouts can vary. Tons of mechs/tanks/etc to unlock and use tho, from a golf cart with an artillery mount to a tank the size of a (small) city block. I wouldn't say it's worth the price out of sale, I didn't get my $1=1h out of it before putting it down, but I mean, look at this goddamn thing:

It's called the treehouse :allears:

On the other hand, I have well surpassed the $1=1hr ratio, and love the game to death. It's not without its learning curve, but the game is very rewarding, has fantastic music, and its own thread and goon developers. It's also not really a roguelike, but you should still buy and play it!

I'm not 100% committed to making difficulty-lowering stuff disable achievements, it just seems right to me? There are people who legit give negative reviews (in part) due to things related to achievements and I kind of don't want to give people any more ammo to lower the game's review score. That's the main motivation.

I think the suggestion above to increase the overall number of achievements is pretty solid: "Achieve goal" / "Achieve goal with no easy modifiers" / "Achieve goal with only hard modifiers"

yeah one thing that jumped out at me was the health bar on the character: i know that it's there because many people die from forgetting to look at the stat bar, but it also makes your character look like he's got a staff at all times. I picked it up as well, and it plays like a modern Crusader: No Remorse. Combat is quick and turns dirty fast, but you often get a lot of time between fights to plan your next attack. The shields on top of your health also help to give you a bit of leeway for mistakes without feeling like you are getting chipped away and death spiraling. Boss fights seemed a bit more brutal, but I don't think I have given it enough playtime yet to adjust to the pace shift when they occur.

Every class also has a special ability permanently mapped to RMB. The Guardian gets a stun grenade (and in this game, grenades are just teleported into place, even if you can't see where they'd go), the Rogue gets to toggle increased accuracy at the cost of slower movement and higher incoming damage, the Specialist gets a ridiculous shotgun blast (11 projectiles that each deal 100% of your main weapon's damage!), and the...fourth guy gets...I forget. They're all cooldown abilities except for the Rogue's, but they're also the kind of thing that can make fights a lot simpler if you can remember to use them.

I generally agree with your assessment of the game.

The RMB item can be swapped out pre-game for any other starting item, and you can remap it in-game by right-dragging your items around, just like you would to recycle something.

Not 100% sure this is the right thread for it, but some points on Star Crawlers? I run a (main) Smuggler, malware Hacker, Haiku Prototype and sentinel Void Guardian. Up to level 10 and I'm clearing missions without much trouble since the team is super tanky, but the fights are starting to take forever. I must admit I've been ignoring weapon upgrades, but it isn't super obvious that they would help. Is that just how the game goes?
Also, can someone explain hacking to me? If I use my deck at all the whole mission reward gets used for repairs.

Combat just kinda takes forever, that's how the game works. Upgraded weapons will help but most of the low tier upgrades are kinda meh. The big thing you want to do is try to kill things before they summon more help.

Hacking is a late addition to the game, it was supposed to be a full expansion pack, but I think they ran out of time and just added it to the base game for everyone. Haven't played a full Gabe since it was released, but it seems super unbalanced and not worthwhile at all.
