If STO had the aesthetic and production values of the new ESD from day one, it would've been a major contender instead of a sideliner in the MMO wars. Imagining ship interiors done as slickly as the spacedock gives me nerd boners.

I haven't bothered to play for some months knowing this was coming, and as I wade through the predictable confusion I'm finding myself fairly unimpressed with the new doodads, especially with a thirty dollar price tag on them. And predictably they just ramped up the grind so you have to run on the treadmill for even longer to return to the relative power you had before, as all the old task forces got dialed up to 11, so all the new bells and whistles don't make you a space badass, they just unnerf you relative to the ramped up difficulty. I am disappoint.

So is the current SOTA to get mk 12 items from fleet and do this stupid upgrade thing to them, or should I skip fleet gear entirely and get better stuff elsewhere?

g0del posted:Well, you're not really going to find higher level stuff elsewhere so you're going to be using the stupid upgrades no matter what. As for what the best gear is, it's generally a mix of fleet, reputation, and zen/lobi items. If you want specifics, what character and ship are you using? I have terrible gimmick setups in my quest to out-pubbie the pubbies. I have a few fairly good pieces of equipment and a lot of relative crap just because it was easy to scoop from quests or the exchange. Harvey - Fed Engineer Crime: Flying a Vesta in the first place. Piling everything into Aux, including the cannons. Equipment: Phasers, except for the omnidirectional AP beam turret, Vesta consoles, tachyokinetic and plasmonic leech, aegis set. SpaceDrizzt - Klankrom Tactical Crime: Set up a Fleet T'varo for firing torpedoes from cloak - then discovered that torpedoes share cooldowns. Equipment: Disruptors, quantum mines, solanae set. G'ladriel - Fedrom Engineer Crime: Actually does okay with a shield-sucking and plasmonic leech console on a Fleet Mogai beamboat. Not sure how well that will translate to the T6. Equipment: Plasma beams, Jem'Hadar set. Jem - Klankrom Tactical Crime: Put polaron guns on Jem'Hadar ships just because the purple looked cool. Newest alt, so ships aren't completely equipped yet. Also has a JHDC with bugship pets. Equipment: Whatever random crap I could shoehorn onto the ships, just recently hit 50.

FuturePastNow posted:It is a pretty ship if you like the Fed aesthetic: Well yeah, it's basically a generic Federation cruiser design, a pretty close shout out to the Galaxy but with a more subdued saucer. If I was looking for a cruiser, I'd consider it a strong contender. Sadly only the Romulans received an intel ship that doesn't look like someone took a decent ship, painted it black, smashed it flat with a hammer, then got some 90s kids to rice it up with cold cathode tubes. And even the Romulan intel ship doesn't look great compared to some of their other stuff, it just isn't fugly. The non-intel T6s look okay except for that thing that looks like someone melted Voyager in a microwave.

About a year back, I got a bugship that I could never conceivably afford for being the first hopeful applicant to successfully complete the Dental application test. Rather than do the smart thing and immediately flip it on the exchange for space riches, I decided that a ship that magical needed an equally magical character to go with it. 80s goons should not have a problem guessing her name. (The Holograms all have SRO. ) (...and the ship is in mark X and XI gear. )

I'm about to hit rom reputation 4 on my fedrom and plan to stock her up with Romulan plasma beams (it violates my pretty space princess dress-up code to put yellow or red beams on her Mogai). I'm definitely getting the experimental beam, but am on the fence about the console and plasma torpedo. On the one hand I could really use some kinetic damage against the giant hull sponges, and I hear the set bonus clicky is powerful. On the other hand the ship is consoled entirely for energy damage, I'd need to put some torp skills on my tac boff, and the torpedo arc doesn't go well with beam broadsides. But just buzzing around with FAW isn't killing poo poo in elites lately. What do?

Read some of the pubbie tears on the forum, and am still confounded that so many Star Trek nerds seem to have not caught on that Voyager was not a powerful ship. It was a fast and efficient ship, but it got its rear end handed to it by most everything they ever encountered because it wasn't a warship. A more nuanced game might actually come up with a decent role for a light exploration vessel; STO is not that game.

The only ship that's really caught my fancy in a while was the Voth star destroyer, and that one just so I could make an alt to dress up like an Imperial. Unfortunately to have the thing work with all the bells and whistles you need two other ships, one of which is insanely rare, so that one's remaining an unfulfilled dream.

What's the current best upgrade path now that omega upgrades are in the mix? I haven't upgraded crap yet because I'm lazy and spacepoor, so there's mark 12 stuff on all of my ships. Should I just start throwing omegas at them right out of the gate, or should I use standard upgrades first and hold off on the omegas until they're at 14?

White doffs are for throwing into the doff grinder fleet projects for fleet credits. Greens are okay as a stopgap measure, but the ones who get things done are blues and purples. Do the colonizing quest chains to get purple doffs, and once you have some duplicates (because the quest chains only give fixed, unique doffs, so multiples aren't useful except in certain circumstances) you can throw them into the grinder as well to get random blues to fill out your stable.
|
# ¿ Feb 24, 2015 22:28 |

Oh jesus no, don't buy their doff packs, they're horrifying ripoffs. You can easily pick up the doffs you need through the 48-hour recruitment missions, the packs you get while leveling, and the colonial exploration doff questlines.

I've pulled down around 180m EC last night from omega sales and have about another 250m worth up in the exchange, hopefully that'll be enough to get the upcoming completely balanced and not P2W ship when it hits. I have another 105 fragments that I could stick on the exchange if need be, but I'd rather make them into upgrades.

# ¿ Mar 3, 2015 20:10 |

This is true, however the rumored ship is supposedly arriving in the not-distant future, putting a bit of a crimp on my ability to sit on the omega stuff for months. But in the meanwhile I've been using my current cash to buy up the cheapest omegas on the market and relist for higher, so hopefully that will help on the revenue front while maintaining my stock of omegas to sell down the road for more.

Surprising nobody, they've made the Galaxy, Negh'Var and D'deridex put on a skimpy dress and new lipstick and trotted them back out in front of the buyers. Don't worry guys, this will solve the financial problems forever. In other news, I'm actually considering firing up a fed newbie to put in a A2B fleet Avenger for the delta thing, does anyone have a spare plasmonic leech gathering dust that I could have? I gave my spare away to a goon a few months back when I wasn't expecting to ever make another federation character.

I was actually expecting the Galaxy to be a P2W nightmare born of desperation for nerd cash, instead I turned out to be amazed at just how mediocre the thing is. I would have bet money that the thing would have a pilot boff seat on it, and most likely a pilot, command, and intel seat instead of just a command seat. I can only conclude that they're trolling the poor nerds who won't let go of their boner for the Galaxy class.

So now that upgrading consoles is a thing, is it smarter to buy the mark 10 stuff and upgrade it from there rather than buying the mark 12s? It saves a shitload of fleet credits and a pittance of dilithium, though the dilithium savings will be quickly countered by the upgrade costs. Mostly it's to save on fleet credits. My delta guy only has a little over 100k, which would be depleted with two consoles if I bought the 12s.

I played SWTOR during the last 12x and had a good time. You really can skip all of the crap missions and just do the better ones to level, the only downside is that staying equipped is basically impossible. There were a couple of spots where I wound up unable to handle a fight because I was in crap gear.
