Can you throw up a link in reference to this because 'carrier pigeon' is just a term that refers to a pigeon that is used to send messages. Given the number of pigeon racing groups that still exist, and that the most common species for carrier pigeons is your run of the mill rock pigeon, I'm not really sure what this could be about. Maybe something to do with Passenger pigeons? Cause those went extinct like a century ago.

edit: A quick check shows that it was a century ago to the day, so maybe that's it?

I'm assuming the reason it's not on a plate is the reason you would want to eat it. It's greasy street food served on paper to absorb the excess grease. Drink liberally and then scarf that down, then drink some more.

Yeah, they way I got them when I was in Europe was meat with some lettuce and garnish vegetables with a delicious sauce crammed into pita or lavash and wrapped up in paper. Some of the best food I've ever had and it's one of my biggest complaints about America that it's incredibly hard to find here. Basically, The Economist is have a hard time wrapping its head around the concept that free labor gained through torture was hugely beneficial to early Capitalism, so they're scrambling to justify ways to polish that turd.

This is bullshit because you can just look at the import rate and black population over time and see that everywhere slavery was practiced in America the slave population had a much diminished life span. This is the most obvious in the West Indies where the slave population remained constant despite massive annual slave imports. Even in Virginia, where the slave population managed to be self sustaining, the population expanded more slowly than expected even when importation was still legal. You don't need the copious amounts of black and white anecdotes about the brutality and horror of slavery, it's all there in the population data. Also the whole human in bondage due to virtue of skin color being hosed up no matter how nice you are.

Bullshit. I'm not even coming from an 'eat the rich' perspective here, in your example those IRA contributions you were having the family make are assets that are orders of magnitudes higher than what people on food stamps are able to accrue. That's not even getting into intangible assets, like the college degrees and personal and professional connections the couple have that open an incredible amount of doors which are closed to people struggling to make a living without as much as a high school diploma. It's true the middle class don't have much in the way of security, but they come nowhere close to the daily walk along the knife edge that is poverty.

Even as an 11 year old I could look at the people around me and see that everyone had lost their loving minds. When Marvel put out a special edition with all the super heroes standing around asking 'Why?' and Dr. Doom is standing off to the side shedding a single silent tear, I knew that the people in charge of everything everywhere were going off the rails hardcore and things were going to get bad. The constant replay of footage of the towers collapsing and stuff disturbed affected me as I'm sure it did everybody on one level or another, but the stuff the made me feel worst was the outbreak of ugly sentiment against people who seemed 'Middle Eastern'. It reminded me of the Japanese internment camps, which were a Bad Thing safely locked away in the past and now suddenly it almost feels like it can happen again, and how is that possible because America is supposed to have moved forward and gotten better? Suffice to say this experience and having all my teenage years during the Bush administrations have made me kind of cynical about the virtues of our country.

Sorry to get all real, I want to say something funny and edgy, but I'm a boring poster at heart.

Through his brilliant and utterly unconventional decision to purposely detach from his line of supply during the Vicksburg campaign, Grant managed to cut the Mississippi and thus doom the Confederacy. Sherman just took advantage of the death blows that Grant had dealt in the western theater. Also his memoirs probably rank with Caesar as the among the best, military or otherwise. 'Confederate rail line' is an oxymoronic phrase. Rivers were still the most rapid means of transportation in America until the standardization of national rail gauge completed and reconstruction thusly ended.

Err... Not sure why you think the Confederate rail lines were a non-factor considering it was the Union cavalry action at Appomattox Station and the loss of the ability to rearm/transport his troops that ended Lee's hopes of slipping away from Grant. Hell, it was Grant's seizure of Sutherland Station that forced Lee's withdrawal from Richmond in the first place. Strategically the Confederates were of course completely outmatched by the Union when it came to rail lines, but that doesn't mean that it never played into the situation. I'm willing to take it to a military history or American history thread somewhere if you want to hash it out.

All the Soviet industry was pulled back behind the Urals anyway, ignoring Stalingrad, taking Moscow, all irrelevant. The Germans would have just re-discovered what Napoleon learned over a century previously, that there's always more room for defenders to pull back on the Russian Steppes.

It certainly is pretty stilted, though I don't know about all anime being that way. And yeah, it isn't some deep treatise on any topic it covers, at one point the idea of a defeat in detail is introduced and it blows some Rear Admirals mind, but it's still more thoughtful, or at least more upfront about it's thoughts, than most of the stuff you'll see outside of books.
