It's really just a cartoon about the famine in Somalia that killed ~260,000 people, half of them being children under 5 years old: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2013/05/201352113337568731.html

Almost 260,000 people, half of them young children, died of hunger during the last famine in Somalia, according to a UN report that admits the world body should have done more to prevent the tragedy. The toll is much higher than was feared at the time of the 2010-2012 food crisis in the troubled Horn of Africa country and also exceeds the 220,000 who starved to death in a 1992 famine, according to the findings.

"The report confirms we should have done more before the famine was declared," said Philippe Lazzarini, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia. "Warnings that began as far back as the drought in 2010 did not trigger sufficient early action," he said in a statement.

Half of those who died were children under five, according to the joint report by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and the US-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network. "Famine and severe food insecurity in Somalia claimed the lives of about 258,000 people between October 2010 and April 2012, including 133,000 children under five," said the report, the first scientific estimate of how many people died.

42 BCE: War is happening in the Roman Empire.

Marcus Brutus begins to plunder the cities of Asia Minor, in order to obtain money and soldiers. The inhabitants of Lycia refused to submit to Rome, and Brutus besieged Xanthus. After destroying their suburbs, the Xanthians withdrew into the heavily fortified city. The Roman legionaries (2,000 men) forced the gate and fight their way into the forum. The citizens made an heroic stand by the temple of Sarpedon, as night falls the Roman army conquers the city. The Xanthians preferred to perish in the flames rather than to yield.

42 CE: War is still happening in the Roman Empire.

Romans take control of Ceuta, a port city on the North African side of the Strait of Gibraltar. The territories of the current Algeria and Morocco become a Roman province. The Dalmatian legate, Furius Camillus Scribonianus, revolts but his troops defect and his rebellion quickly withers.

I was tempted to throw in a battle from WW2 about a 1942 battle in Italy, but there wasn't much fighting happening there there yet. Although since the Romans were screwing around in Algeria:

November 8, 1942: Operation Torch: United States and United Kingdom forces land in French North Africa. French Resistance Coup in Algiers: 400 French civil resisters neutralize the Vichyist XIXth Army Corps and the Vichyist generals (Juin, Darlan, etc.) thus allowing the immediate success of Operation Torch in Algiers, and ultimately the whole of French North Africa.

I've also been trying to throw in more BCE stuff, since last thread was basically all CE events. We can't have negative page numbers, so ya gotta put BCE events somewhere.

In my history classes I'd always had a sense that there was more to the story of why the Europeans always seemed to have the upper hand in world events, and Guns, Germs, and Steel laid it out in a way that didn't pretend that the Europeans were innately superior because of some sort of "culture".

Blue Bell ice cream had evidence of listeria bacteria in its Oklahoma manufacturing plant as far back as March 2013, a government investigation released Thursday says. The company then continued to ship ice cream produced in that plant after what the Food and Drug Administration says was inadequate cleaning.

Three listeria deaths in Kansas are now linked to the ice cream. The company recalled all of its products last month, following several smaller recalls.

The FDA released its investigations into Blue Bell's plants in Oklahoma, Texas and Alabama after a Freedom of Information request by The Associated Press. The most extensive violations were found in Oklahoma, where the FDA released 16 separate positive tests for listeria on equipment and in ice cream from March 2013 through January 2015.

Blue Bell did not immediately respond to a phone call or email seeking comment.

Violations in the Oklahoma plant include dirty equipment, inadequate food storage, food being held at improper temperatures and employees not washing hands adequately.

There were also violations at the Texas and Alabama plants. In Alabama, FDA investigators observed at least two employees working with the food wearing soiled clothing. In Texas, investigators saw condensation dripping directly into food and onto surfaces that came directly in contact with food. In all of the plants, the FDA found dirty equipment and infrastructure that made cleaning difficult.

Pretty much, but investigating AIPAC's money properly is hard as gently caress. You can find solid numbers without too much difficulty, but finding out who funds AIPAC is is the super hard part.

And on that end you end up running into/getting sucked down the "NWO jews pull all the strings in America/the world" anti-Semitic poo poo.

And then you run into the part where Sheldon Adelson really is pulling a shitload of strings:

Jewish Birthright posted:

Eligible individuals are those who have at least one parent of recognized Jewish descent and who do not actively practice another religion, between the ages 18 to 26, post-high-school, who have neither traveled to Israel before on a peer educational trip or study program past the age of 18 nor have lived in Israel past the age of 12. A Taglit-Birthright Israel trip includes airfare from major cities, hotels, most meals, all transportation within Israel, and costs associated with touring the country for the ten-day trip. A US$250 deposit is required which is refunded upon return from the trip. Airfare or transportation from a participant's home to the gateway city is not included, although the trips depart from multiple cities.
--
In 2007, annual capacity was increased to 20,000 participants a year. That year, Sheldon Adelson pledged $25 million to Birthright Israel to take applicants off waiting lists and to increase annual capacity from 25,000 to 37,000 in 2007 and 2008.[6] The Adelson Family Foundation has contributed many millions of US $s annually to Birthright Israel since 2007.[7] In 2011, he pledged an additional $5 million toward the effort. In 2013, Adelson doubled his past annual commitment to Birthright Israel, announcing a $20 million challenge grant that will match new and increased gifts or pledges through 2015. This raises Adelson's total support of the program to over $250 million as of February 2015.
Now, lest you think you can be an awesome smartass and use the trip/Sheldon Adelson's money for anything remotely Pro-Palestine/Pro-Palestinian related:

quote:

Security policies in place during the trip "ensure a comprehensive safety umbrella":

No travel to the West Bank, Gaza, or East Jerusalem other than the Jewish Quarter of the Old City
Participants in each group remain together at all times and follow a set schedule of activities
Participants do not leave the groups to travel, explore or visit with Israelis on their own during the ten-day trip
Public transportation is not allowed at any time
At least one highly trained, armed escort accompanies each group throughout the entire trip
