The conservatives are going to tear themselves apart. Most people who know who Kenney is know exactly who he is.

This might be the first step in alberta staying orange.

As an Albertan, I am delighted by this idea. Kenney is a socially regressive idiot-- we have a party for those people already, the Wildrose. The PCs used to be able to pretend that they were a big tent party, but it's becoming increasingly clear there is no place for social progressives/lefties in that party. I hope the right wing eats itself, splits the vote and ushers in an NDP dynasty. 40 years would be okay.

I think there's a lot of concern about being "unfriendly to business". Unfortunately, people don't seem to realise that about 40% of our economy is reliant on oil in one way or another, and that the NDP don't actually control the price of oil-- and that the pain we're experiencing right now is the inevitable result of being reliant on one single resource for so loving long. There's also a fair bunch of socially regressive assholes who think that support for LGBT students and that kind of thing should be outlawed. Also, she's a woman. Alberta is apparently the worst province to be a woman in, and that's pretty clearly reflected in the way we treat politicians who happen to be women.

The stance of Alberta on pipelines lately has been severely disappointing, but not unexpected. I had hoped that we would be moving towards actual diversification that would create long term jobs vs. 4500 jobs for construction of a pipeline for a fairly short-term duration. I suppose it was too much to expect that the NDP would be any different than any other political party in that regard.

That's sort of what it's sounding like right now. I think (hope) there's going to be a lot of former PC aligned people, like Lukaszuk, who just throw up their hands and say gently caress it. I think any merger between the PCs and Wildrose will just be like, full on lake of fire loony tunes. There's a bunch of people who don't like the socially conservative stuff, but cling to the idea of being a "fiscal conservative" so they'll pretty much have to vote for the AB party. Libs are toxic in AB and always will be, so they're not an option. I am desperately hoping that the NDP manage to pull off a second term-- partly because if they don't get in, I'm not going to have a job, but also because I actually think we are taking some small steps towards economic diversification under them. Although I am really disappointed with the whole doubling down on pipelines thing.

Yes. There's very little direct funding for research and innovation, and we've moved away from basic research into stuff that can be commercialized. Of course, poo poo isn't really commercialized in Canada (outside of Quebec which is the only province which has a positive IP flow for some reason...) for a variety of reasons depending on field, including money, lovely bureaucracy, etc. There's a lot of things we could do improve innovation and research especially in Alberta-- Quebec and Ontario are doing pretty well on that score, as is BC. None of the other provinces really register. There's been some positive moves lately, but nothing on the scale that we need. But it's not an area that shows immediate results so no one wants to put money into it. There's also a gap in resources where we have a lot for start ups, and a decent amount for bringing products to market, but there's nothing for that try-and-fail phase, which is actually a really necessary part of the process.

Imagine being Rachel Notley, the first-ever NDP premier of Alberta, and knowing that you are going to lose the next election literally no matter what you do, and then spending all your energy and political capital fighting to spend taxpayer dollars on a privately-owned oil pipeline.

This is really what I don't understand. The ANDP has (or at this point, perhaps had) a fairly solid left wing base that's concentrated in a few urban ridings, and they're now alienating that base. Right/centre Albertans will not, imo, vote for the ANDP again. I think a lot of folks are going to swing to the Alberta Party now that it's ye olde PC rebranded. The UCP will pull the usual amount of people, and the ANDP will end up with less than they had before this election.

I mean, they must have some political strategists, even if they're clearly not doing their jobs. There's no hope in hell that throwing a fit like an angry kindergartner over the pipeline is going to convince folks to vote for an NDP majority again.

It absolutely crosses economic class lines but its symptoms are much worse when you don't have an outlet due to financial needs. Someone with the means to go out and at least try to connect with people is going to fare better than someone who cannot because they can't afford to do it. Financial anxiety can cripple a person's social life and it compounds with other anxieties.

This is absolutely true. I have a friend who is very mentally ill, for a few reasons. He's autistic, and had a really rough time growing up, so he has a lot of issues relating to people and trusting them. It's deeply compounded by the fact that he lives in poverty because he's too ill to work. He got trapped in a shite living situation too, and has had bedbugs for basically the past 6 years or so. He has been living like this because he didn't want to tell people, because he was afraid of losing friends. Literally the only reason this changed was he had a breakdown and told me about it-- I had no idea things were that bad until recently. And since then, trying to get help for him has been a loving *terrible* process. Like, getting him mental health care took a long-rear end time, and then trying to get him the appropriate government support has been horrifying, because there's so much paperwork, and such a long processing time. I honestly can't understand how anyone who is not neurotypical, abled, and skilled with paperwork is supposed to get through the system, and it's because government support in particular seems based on the idea that people are lying to get support. Because living on $1688 in Alberta gives you such a loving baller lifestyle, everyone dreams of living under the poverty line?? I am not sure that there is a path for him that ends up with him having a rich social circle and a life that is anything much beyond liveable at best.

Whereas, my mental health experience has been much much more pleasant, and it's because I have enough money and good health insurance plan that allows me to phone up a therapist and get in to see them immediately when I need to, and if I *had* to move apartments tomorrow, I could.

His tv was salvaged from the trash, I think! But yeah, he definitely has electronics so is clearly not poor. /s

He's actually in an interestingly difficult place, because there would be more resources available if he were literally homeless. I've got him on the wait list for social housing, but because he technically has a place to live, he's not very high on the priority list, which is approximately two years. And on the social isolation note, I am trying to facilitate him moving into another place right now, but because of the bedbug issue, he has to discard all of his belongings, including his electronics. So, the computer is basically his main form of social interaction and we have to figure out some way of replacing that, which is something that I have no idea how to do. All of the charities I've found don't provide that kind of assistance, the government certainly doesn't, and after ten years of living on like, $900 a month, he has no money to replace this stuff. So basically, our social supports are bloody awful and inadequate, and I've written so many letters to government officials that they probably hate the sight of my name, and all they say is that "there's more to be done" but won't loving do it.

I'm definitely venting, but ChairMaster's situation hits very very close to home for me, because I am deeply afraid and angry that my friend might have taken that path.
