Can we claim ships not yet built? If so, I'm pulling for the Hiyō, the the most salutatory carrier that has ever sailed.

My turn for story time: My paternal grandfather was in the Army Air Corps, and missed his boat to the European theater. He was then sent to India where he spent the rest of the war being a drill sergeant or something because he came up with the idea for farm boys to put a rock in the pocket that they start marching with in formation. Most of the troops on the boat he missed ended up in the Battle of the Bulge. My maternal grandfather had his 9th birthday the day after Pearl Harbor (WAY TO RUN THE FUN, GREY HUNTER! ) His father (my great-grandfather) was called up, however, to serve in the medical corps. The family moved to San Francisco so he could finish some formal medical education. He then received orders to report to Augusta, GA to become part of an unnamed general hospital which they took to mean a field hospital getting prepared to send to Europe. As it turns out, he served at the Hotel turned Hospital the Forrest Hills-Ricker and spent the duration of the war mostly giving GI's with the clap injections of penicillin.

Grey Hunter posted:The first sleep deprived update begins – the rest of the war will be fought on minimal sleep, which will be role-played as serous inter-service rivalries and incompetence amongst generals. Today is done on a nice 4 hours after two days with three hours between them. (7 hours in a three day period.) The absolute best parenting advice that was ever given to my wife and me when our first child was born was if it is at all practical: instead of taking turns within each night getting up with the baby, take turns for entire nights. That way, every other night you're guaranteed some uninterrupted sleep. It worked wonders with our firstborn who was tough to get back to sleep. Our second kid is super easy to get back down at night, we were unprepared for that.

Grandpachat: my paternal grandfather missed his boat to the European theater, where his unit ended up participating in the Battle of the Bulge. Not many made it home. He, on the other hand, was sent to India instead. He was fresh off a farm, and helped other fresh off the farm boys learn how to march by telling them to put a rock in their pocket and always start out on the leg with the rock. Spent his whole war in India doing that. My maternal grandfather was two days after his 13th birthday when Pearl Harbor was attacked. HIS father was a physician and spent the war at an army hospital in Augusta, GA. Mostly giving penicillin injections to guys who caught the clap.
