I've had conversations with Japanese people about this, and the thing you need to understand is that the forces that keep this imbalance of power in place are somewhat mutual. I've been very struck at times by how willing Japanese women I've met are very content to play a role, and reject me quite harshly for not acting in kind. Japan is a country built on people acting how others expect them to act, and this goes both ways. Japan has a serious case of rape culture, and you're just not going to crack that. Most average Japanese women would be very confused to hear about a sexual encounter that wasn't what we in the west would consider rape.

I don't remember the name, but I saw this in another movie to and find that amazing. I assume different companies were contracted out for the work, but it was crazy to see different translations of the same movie at the same time. I'm surprised the studios don't care about making it consistent.

That happens with pretty much all dubs and subs: usually the subtitles are a translation of what's said and the dub is a minor rewrite taking culture and mouth movements into account. This is true for stuff dubbed/subtitled into English from foreign languages as well.

That makes sense, but doesn't closed caption in English have everything? Why would Japanese be different for people not being able to read as fast?

I've seen discs with two sets of subtitles in a given language: one that's CC for the dub and one that's normal subtitles for the movie's native language. I think Chomskyan is complaining about the complete lack of subtitles for a non-dubbed movie and you and Tea.EarlGrey.Hot. might be talking about discs that don't have CC subtitles. Both lame situations, I agree.

Hey guys I have some questions maybe you can help me with.

I met my wife in Japan 2 years ago while I was over there teaching English for a semester. I'm now 32, she's 22. We started dating, got engaged, married, and she came over to the US via the K1 visa program about 5 months ago.

There are several issues that have come up since we got married and moved in together. I'm hoping for some goon advice from others in relationships, even if they're not exactly like this. Keep in mind she has been in the US officially for about 5 months. I understand there is a huge cultural change and learning curve, but some of this is crazy.

1) She still hasn't learned to drive. But not through lack of trying. She has extremely bad nerves, and every time she even gets in the driver's seat she freaks out and starts shaking and sweating. We tried parallel parking once and she just floored it while the E-brake was still on. I had to physically pull her foot off the pedal. We try driving at least half an hour a day and she's gotten no more comfortable with it.

2) Her English is pretty good, but she still prefers speaking Japanese all the time. My Japanese is alright, but I don't catch everything, especially slang and things like that. Many times after an argument she'll run into the bedroom, lock the door, and start yelling things at me in Japanese that I don't understand.

3) We are having some money issues - mostly tied to the fact that I'm the only one working. I'm a substitute teacher, and work is spotty at best. I also do work as a landscaper but it's winter so there's nothing going on. So finances are TIGHT right now. We've looked for work she can do from home until the driving situation is fixed, but most of it needs a way better understanding of English.

4) We still haven't consummated our marriage. The most she's willing to do is some stuff with her feet, no actual intercourse. This is a nerves thing again.

For some reason all the resources on the internet say to wait until you get to Japan to exchange currency because the rate will be better. From my experience that is utter bullshit as every single currency exchange I've seen has had a rate that is at least 10% worse than what our bank offered in Canada.

That's because those resources are for people from real countries like 'Merica

Ok so you're the other side of the coin. I've heard what you're telling me from some people and others have said they grill you on your driving history. What was the paperwork you missed? I'm sure I've got everything I need...

Make sure you can prove you lived in the country your license was issued for three months after the date you can prove you got your license. Renewed recently? Make sure you lived three months in wherever after the renewal date, have your previous license, or have some official record of your license status from the government. Being able to prove you've had it for over a year means you won't start out as a "beginner driver" and have to slap that dumb leaf on the front and back of your car.

This is true. A lot of Japan's stuff is based off a really old standard for NFC pretty much nothing else uses, so Apple only bothers to put it in Japanese iPhones.

The curse of early adoption.

It's FeLiCa and the NFC standard is supposed to be a superset of it. I think the block is software/firmware and Apple just wanted an excuse to discourage people from buying unlocked phones from overseas.

Stringent posted:

You got a source on that? I was planning on getting an unlocked phone next cycle, but that might put a new wheel on the wagon.
You can still get the Japan model unlocked. You just can't get it from outside the country. The model numbers for the 7 are A1779 (CDMA) and A1785 (CDMA) https://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

You can convert it, you just need to take a test or two. If you've got a Washington State or Maryland driver's license, you just need to take a really easy written true/false test. Everyone else has to take a Kafkaesque driving test in addition to the written test. Def go to a driving school to practice it. I ended up taking the non-conversion route and went through driving school over here. I failed the driving test too many times and didn't want to burn holiday going in to fail again. Driving school wasn't so bad, but it's awfully pricey.

That visa was probably good for one entry. After that you enter based on your status of residency proven by your residency card.

It’s not like doing the right thing and getting your license converted is always easy either.

There's a stupid easy true/false test that I think everyone has to take. It's the driving exam that folks with Canadian et al licensees don't need to take. Also good call on saying "most Americans": holders of Washington state and Maryland driver's licenses get to do the easy-mode conversion too as of a year or two ago.
