They definitely started to get a little more adventurous with the directing in the final seasons, yeah.

Speaking of, something changes in season 7 that I can’t quite put my finger on, aesthetically. The show looks and feels...emptier? Somehow cheaper?

I first noticed it in the jump from Time's Arrow, Part I and Part II. Part I looks like what you'd expect a normal TNG episode to look like, and then suddenly Part II has that weird, fuzzy, super bright white and Vaseline lens soap opera lighting that they used all throughout DS9.

Even more yikes was that was written to explain Chakotay’s backstory.

Chakotay has two aspects of his character that are set up in TNG. The first is that he was allegedly Ro Laren's teacher at Starfleet Academy, and secondly, he went "gently caress this racist poo poo" and joined the Maquis when the Federation began forcibly removing off-world Native American colonies along the Cardassian Neutral Zone. We never really get confirmation that the first one is 100% true, but it makes the Trek universe feel a little bit more connected, so people handwave it into being true.

Random factoid: two days before filming Generations started they came in to do some work on the set and discovered someone had come by and stolen the captain's chair right off the bridge set, and they had to work no sleep to slap together a replacement before shooting began.

Didn't this happen to Patrick Stewart more than once too? Didn't someone steal Professor X's wheelchair between X-Men movies and they had to get it back?

I wish they went with the original ending they'd filmed of Picard trying to save Ru'afo, and Ru'afo going "nah" and launching himself into the planet's rings and accidentally de-aging himself into nonexistence. It would have been a much more poignant ending.

But test audiences wanted more Action Picard and less TNG Picard :negative:

No, but the main(?) character gets caught in the first episode making a fake captain's log because he's a giant Starfleet weeb. It also heavily implies that the actual captain's logs used to stage set episodes are simply the final product of a LOT of gently caress up takes, because the actual captain has to keep redoing hers a lot because she keeps getting interrupted by Star Trek poo poo all the time.

First Contact:

- Helped launch the Phoenix

Insurrection:
- Shaved off Riker's beard in a horny bubble bath
- Helped Riker infodump about why the Son'a are such massive shitlords
- Talked about her boobs

Nemesis:
- Got married
- Got mindraped

If nothing else, I’m more curious about this coming season just because it’ll (probably) have had a singular cohesive writer’s room/showrunner for the first time in the show’s run.

And of that I’ve no doubt, I was talking more about the utterly incredulous stuff like story of Alex Kurtzman ripping a 70” plasma screen TV off the wall and throwing it across a conference room in a fit of rage because he was informed that a no-name gimmick YouTuber had made another video trashing Discovery, which totally happened, trust me guys, my sources NEVER lie. poo poo like that.

My favorite pissy Picard moment is in The Naked Now, when he tells the Chief Engineer du jour to "get that boy out of engineering". The contempt in his voice is just funny to me.

That was something Edward James Olmos did on Battlestar Galactica. The way you could tell whether Adama respected someone or not is if he made eye contact when speaking to them. If it was someone he had absolutely no time for or just loving hated, he would stare past them or at the wall or the floor or start reading something to keep his eyes focused elsewhere.

It was a really neat acting choice, and somewhat tangentially relevant because EJO was actually the runner up for the role of Picard after P.Stew.
