Ever since it opened a couple of years ago, more and more Chinese people have been flocking to the discount chemist near where I live (in Australia), to the extent that the local cinema has even started showing Chinese movies. It's also the first chemist/pharmacy I've ever seen to have a security guard. https://ajp.com.au/news/chemist-warehouse-among-singles-day-loved/ quote:The top five most purchased products were New Zealand’s Aptamil milk powder; vitamin brand Bio Island; Swisse vitamins and two Japanese nappy brands, Kao Merries and Moony.

Grand Fromage posted:Yep. There was a plant in the traditional herbal pharmacopoeia which contained an effective anti-malarial chemical, and it was isolated and used. The thing is that TCM is this entire system of magical bullshit. What that scientist did was go through a number of old herbal remedies, scientifically testing them to see if there were actual effective medicines in there. That chemical worked and was researched and used in proper, controlled medical trials. Hence, medicine. This is how all real medicine works. Nobody denies the concept that there are naturally occurring medical chemicals, plenty of the real medicine we use is derived from plants and fungi and stuff. The point is it is done scientifically and systematically, which makes it medicine. TCM is sympathetic magic. Wasn't there some added irony in that the TCM preparation neutralises the active ingredient (through boiling or something else)?

I grew up in the heavily-wooded urban fringe of an Australian city and in 20 years only ever saw snakes at zoos or wildlife parks. And once I saw a dead one on a country road. How are Americans not all dead yet from the non-stop attacks by grizzly bears, black widows, mountain lions and rattlesnakes? Is this why everyone has at least one gun on their person at all times?

Devils Affricate posted:s in the news this morning. Apparently Marriott today set off major alarm bells in China for possibly violating cyber security/advertising laws and causing public outcry. Their offense? They had a questionnaire on their bookings app that accidentally listed Hong Kong, Tibet, Macau, and Taiwan as separate countries. Chinese netizens predictably lost their poo poo, and Marriott's website and app were shut down. An investigation is underway. Would I be correct in assuming that "listing Chinese-claimed regions such as Tibet and Taiwan as separate countries" refers to a drop-down list that included those localities as well as other countries? Edit: found this with regards to Taiwan's status: "If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then maybe it's hurting the feelings of the Chinese people." I say this one is worse because the cement truck incident is just this unbelievable cascade of events that you'd never be able to replicate if you tried, it's so unlikely it goes from tragedy to black comedy. The fates wanted that rider dead and nothing he did was going to let him escape.
