Disenchantment was OK at best, middling most of the time, and absolute garbage too often.

It falls into so many of the bad comedy series traps, like not being confident enough to let a subtle joke be. For instance, in one of the first episodes Elfo and the princess escape into a magical forest, and there's a "Beware the racist unicorn" sign briefly shown at the forest entrance. That would've been a funny background joke, and I got a good chuckle out of imagining what a racist unicorn would be like. Then I spent the next 5 or so minutes going "please don't show the racist unicorn and ruin the joke, PLEASE". But of course they do: a unicorn turns up to see Elfo and the princess sleeping next to each other and goes 'an ELF and a HUMAN? That's just WRONG".

No. The guys who do the Talkin' Simpsons podcast asked one of the writers of that episode, and it was confirmed that Homer is talking about some other time he saw a guy say goodbye to a shoe.

Haven't thought about that, but that is probably super helpful for Roger to just be a different character so you don't run into the Simpsons/Family Guy thing of just having too many characters around that you have to flesh out. If you just need this type of character to do an episode, you don't need to bring in a character, name them, then either write them into the universe or just awkwardly dump them at the end of an episode.

Plus, they've started getting weird with the Roger personas. Like in some episode one of his personas will have a human twin brother, and their mother will also be Roger in a different costume. And of course, because American Dad is meta as hell, everyone else realizes how weird this is as well.

It's just such a well written, self-aware and amazingly fresh show that constantly keeps surprising me, and making me laugh harder than any other show.

My big problem with Disenchantment is, in a nutshell, this:

In the first episode they go into a forest and there's a sign by the entrance saying something like "WELCOME TO THE ENCHANTED FOREST". And below is another, smaller sign with "Beware the racist unicorn" written on it. That was a funny joke. A racist unicorn? What's that even like? It's a great idea, and I loved that he was such a big problem they had to make a sign about it.

But then later in the episode Bean and Elfo are sleeping in the forest, and they pan over to a unicorn saying in a redneck voice "A HUMAN LADY AND AN ELF? THAT AIN'T RIGHT!"

Like just loving let the joke be. You don't have to explain everything, you don't have to underline every joke twice. That's why Futurama and Good Simpsons were so amazing: they let the one percenters and the background jokes go, and when you got them they were amazing.

Admittedly I haven't really watched American Dad much since it left FOX, and yes there are some brilliant episodes, but they constantly re-used the same conflicts and same basic premises, almost always involving Roger pulling a bait-and-switch against the family.

Kinda, but they've decided to own it several years ago, and are intentionally going into weirder and more surreal places with it. I know that doesn't potentially sound amazing because we've all played games or seen shows where they intentionally do something bad or irritating and think it's OK because they're telling you they know it's bad and irritating at the same time (see: "ironic" escort missions in games), but American Dad nails it.

The problem was that it was part of an increasing trend of veering out of their lane. The Simpsons was initially grounded in reality and had plausible scenarios that a real family might deal with, with occasional cartoonish lapses (i.e. Homer falling down the cliff repeatedly, the monorail episode).

Speaking of this, kind of at least a bit, the whole "so you kids want to see everyday problems and far out magical things" brain scratcher in the Itchy & Scratchy & Poochy episode that's supposed to be impossible to fulfill. It's always bugged me because "fantasy creatures / mages / scifi elves dealing with everyday problems" has been a staple of comics and books since there's been comics and books.

poo poo, Adventure Time and a bunch of other shows that are a lot more popular than the Simpsons were built on that exact premise.

If I could twist Al Jean's arm and make him answer a question, I'd ask him to explain to me what the joke here is. I get what is happening here, but what is the joke? "Imagine a guy eating a lot of food" isn't a joke. What's the joke here, Al?

To contrast with a classic episode, the first thing that popped into my head: in "Lisa the Simpson" Jasper is frozen in the freezer at the Quik-e-mart. OK, "old guy has accidentally managed to mess up his grocery shopping so badly he's frozen solid in a freezer" is actually a joke. That's funny! But then it turns out that he hasn't in fact accidentally frozen himself, but rather did it intentionally because he wanted to see the future. That's another layer, and it's funny! And the shop's owner, rather than helping the guy, decides to cash in on this event and charge people to see "Frostillicus". Another layer! And then after he's thawed he doesn't realize he's been frozen for like an hour and is impressed by everyday things as insanely futuristic. Yet another layer!

Or... you know. A guy eats a lot of food at famous New Orleans restaurants and his family doesn't approve.

We saw the Simpsons Movie in theaters when it was new, and although I was long checked out on the show by then, I remember that for the first 20-30 minutes of the movie we laughed so hard my face hurt.

Yeah.

In one of the first episodes, or maybe the first, there's an establishing shot of a magic forest the characters are in, and there's a sign outside. "MAGIC FOREST -- Beware the Racist Unicorn", or something to that effect. And it was a fun joke. What even is a racist unicorn? What is it racist against? What is it doing to make people beware it?

And they couldn't leave it there. Later there's a scene where the characters are sleeping in the forest and we cut to the unicorn going "human women with elves? Now that just ain't right" and ruining the entire joke.

Kinda hate thinking about how a joke like this would've been mangled in later seasons of The Simpsons. For one they definitely would not have trusted the audience to understand the significance of the Apollo Theater and would've shown a black audience. And they probably would've called it the Napollo Theater.
