At one point in the game are you supposed to "graduate" to heavy/assault mechs? Seems like I'm running mostly mediums right now (main lance is a Centurion, Blackjack, Griffin, and uhh something else like that idk i forgot) I just completed the ammo cache mission in campaign.

I also just passed that mission. I've got a Grasshopper, a couple of Dragons, and a couple of Quickdraws. I only use the Grasshopper and one Dragon so far, though. Still got a Centurion LRM boat and Shadow Hawk.

I just salvaged a Jagermech last night on contract.

I just did the "Escape" campaign mission where you face off against 3 Assaults and I was a bit nervous about that. The very first alpha strike against the Zeus popped the head clean off. Hah. It wasn't even a precision strike.

It's actually a pretty easy mission, I just played it completely wrong the first time around.

Big gun instant kill headshots aren't ~efficient~ compared to endless ML/SRM spam, but they're fun as hell.

I like having one Heavy or Assault with JJs, AC20, and punch mods. Put a master tactician in it for better initiative (plus the command computer you get in that unique CP mech) and it's a death machine. There aren't too many mechs in the game that will withstand a called AC20 shot to the back torso.
If using a Banshee (I forgot which variant is the right one to use for this) with punch mods in both arms, you can deal some ridiculous 240-250 in melee damage. So really, the AC20 is just there for closing in.

Well poo poo. I wasn't going to buy this but I lost interest in XCOM2 for the moment and I need something to play.
Also the season pass is discounted right now on Steam. I paid $16 and change for the season pass which takes into consideration that I already owned the other two DLC.

Yeah I've done it both ways. If you campaign first, you'll just breeze through most flashpoints and some of the contracts can be challenging, sort of.
Starting a fresh campaign, the flashpoints provide a nice line of progression in difficulty, required tonnage, and gear.

gently caress, I'm over ten hours into this expansion and the only upgraded weapons I've seen/have are LBX/2's. I seen plenty of the new mechs though.

Also, despite having well over 200 hours into the game, I just now realized how terrible the Banshee 3M really is. My Orions mount more weaponry than that! I keep the Banshee around for its insane punch mods, but it's too drat slow to effectively meelee.
Is there any use for it?

So is there a game plan for missions where you got to plant beacons while dealing with all the base defences and mechs? Going too slow is no good and rushing in seems suicidal. Either way tend to get chewed up mighty good.

I like running 3 heavies or assaults and one light or medium mech with lots of JJs and the right pilot. The heavies keep the enemy busy while the little guy rushes around, relying on cover and evasion.

Edit: A variation of this that I once tried: 3 big LRM boats pinning the enemy down from further away instead.

I'm loving this new DLC. I had about 210 hours into it before then and was kind of tired of it. But the new flash points, the new mechs and special abilities, and best of all the new kickass weapons really breathed new life into it for me. I just completed the timer on my second career at 240 hours.
I bought this DLC and RDR2 at the same time because sales, but have barely an hour into the latter by now. All my time went into Heavy Metal.

You really want mechs with good heat management and pilots with coolant vent for that Flash Point, given that it's in the lunar biome with heavy opposition.

It helps to sneak around the edge of the map to space out the opposing force.

Just a single SL, max jump jets and armor, and two meelee++ arm mods. LOL it jumps across half the map and punches for 90 DMG + 50 STB.

Stuck between two legendary mech warriors? That takes some ingenuity and creative thinking since their mechs are going to be even crazier than your OPed machines.

In other words, run backwards to the bank that has some forest cover and park your rear end there. Being legends and having a burning hatred of each other they'll go at each other if your not in the way.

Tossing in some indirect fire, maybe targeting a mech of the other side when one side gets dominant and before you know it they'll be whittled down to dust.

Then it's time to heroically and bravely charge in and that's how you beat two legendary mech warriors easy peasy.

My 395t lance took a tiny bit of armor loss during that engagement, nothing else. I didn't even move from that forested spot you mention.
Endgame feels insanely overpowered now. I have 3 x Atlas, 2 x King Crab, and the Bull Shark, all fully kitted out in murder setups.

After finishing my current career with all of the new DLC content, I started a new campaign with the intent to transition to career after.
A couple of observations about this:

1. You do not get the Heavy Metal loot crate at the start of a new campaign.

2. Going for full cash this time is working out well. I've got plenty of cbills to shop for nice stuff, which leads to...

3. The new weapons are OP. Four hours in, I was doing decently until I went shopping in a well-equipped store for a couple LB-10X +, a UAC20, plus a few other things - and now I'm just blowing through contracts.

I've only ever found the regular and ++ versions, never just the single +.
