That model is so, so, busy I can't tell what's going on or what I'm looking at.

I don't want to be h8ter, but I'm with the other goons who say the new GW CAD style has way too much detail.

Yeah it's not like I hate it or anything, but it's too busy for me.

I think that's one of the reasons I'm not drawn to most GW minis anymore. They look great with a white backdrop all alone, but when you put them in a real environment with other models the detail turns into noise.

Could you run a contemptor mortis or deredeo? Those do well against fliers if you can take them in 40k. There's also the hellblade.

I'm working on one collecting some thoughts about 8th edition that'll be out this week.

I thought you've seen PNW crew's posting? 30k players are definitely a negative. Pretty objective other than that!

The only thing I'd add is that there is an upcoming rulebook that's likely going to be 7.5. It feels to me that people don't acknowledge the significance of this- releasing a HH specific rulebook just for 30k. That speaks a lot to their commitment to staying on their own system for the indefinite future. They're also taking over the specialist game space and 30k has been on it's way to becoming it's own game for some time. One of the reasons it's been pretty balanced is that it was written in 6th and never got fully converted to 7th. They took the things they liked and ignored the ones they didn't. Some of the things people like in 8th came from the 30k books. IMO the contents of the new rulebook, whenever we get it, will be the most telling about how committed they are to keeping the game separate or not.

I'm a whiny baby like Perturabo, but I'm impressed with most of 8th edition. I just prefer a less streamlined game for 30k as it's a game for grognard 40k players. It's fine if they convert it over, but that wouldn't be my preference.

I suspect that China doesn't have the capability to produce to the level of quality that GW is doing. This isn't some kind of dig at Chinese manufacturing; it's just that GW has a ridiculously niche application and they have spent literally decades perfecting every aspect of their process.

No way. At least when it comes to resin, China can put out higher quality recasts than the original models from GW.

The only thing they still don't touch are vacuum formed plastics such as the realm of battle boards. From speaking with a few of them, it's less about capability and more about setup costs for a niche market. Traditional resin casting isn't an option for those due to shipping costs and material costs.

Not even in the surface level 'i know a guy who bought all recasts and they are lighter and smell like burning dogshit' commentary? Shame, I'm mostly wondering if it's really that prolific. How could I tell without checking his PayPal transactions?

Cum to 30k slack, friend

I've been needing to do a blog post about recasts. Not about buying them, but more about the history, market, quality, and those sorts of things. I'm sure it varies from area to area, but I'd wager that 80% of the models in some places I've played have been from recasters. There are more recasters now than there have ever been, largely due to the popularity of 30k and the failure of finecast.

Mugaaz posted:

Without going into nitty gritty specifics, compared to GW prices, how much are people paying percentage wise for recasts that are decent?

Most recasters stick to forgeworld for a few reasons- easier to recast, higher profit margins, and very high demand. You can usually tell how well something is selling depending on how many recasters are stocking it. Another thing recasters do is that they more closely charge you for the cost of resin instead of the point value of the model on the table. So a sergent costs only a few dollars less than a limited edition named character, or whatever.

GW Primaris captain- $5 vs $35

FW Castellax- $14 vs $53
