What America has is a history of white supremacy that was never rightfully crushed, whether that was at the end of the Civil War or at the end of segregation. Both times, the racist shitheads responsible for the heirarchies and the exploitation didn't answer for a single one of their crimes. Even South loving Africa had Truth and Reconciliation committees after apartheid, but the architects of America's racist hierarchy just sort of faded into the crowd after it became inconvenient for them to be open about their goals, and so they've festered for the last fifty years or so. To wit though, I'd actually say America's white supremacy problem doesn't always express it self in outright 'a white person thinks they're better than everyone else'. Sometimes it's just more, ambivalent about their 'whiteness' and just being extremely anti-black, anti-hispanic, anti-chinese, anti-anyone-they-don't-see-as-white in general. The effect is largely identical either way.

America could and should have killed the entire Confederate leadership and shot every slaveowner on sight, and if we'd done that the USA as superpower now would probably still have a few extra decades of life left in it. but we didn't do that and lol now the slow poison we didn't excise has reached the heart. We've literally never made the upper class accoutable, except when they screw over other rich people. The most likely scenario IMO is China just blockades the island, brings it officially under its jurisdiction as a kind of semi-autonomous island, then slowly integrates it over a few decades. Even if Taiwan's army is dwarfed by China's, it's a naturally defensible fortress and an actual invasion would be a bloodbath just about no matter which way you strike it. The only way it becomes easy for China is if Taiwan gets to like First Gulf War Iraq levels of army cohesion and its military just crumbles the nanosecond it meets the enemy

There's got to be a kind of "force multiplier" to how easy it is to spy on a country when said country has a general notion about it that it doesn't have a future. It's probably way easier to bribe/blackmail some general into spilling their secrets if they're not even sure the country's going to exist in ten years
