What’s the thread think about American Factory? I got too high and came away thinking it was a state capitalist’s warning that labor alone – especially the kind of contract-focused trade unionism the UAW was after in the film – is no match for advanced capitalism.

Just watched The Laundromat on Netflix, I guess the message is the CCP and Xi are cool and good, and Chinese intelligence was the “John Doe” whistleblower behind the Mossack Fonseca hack that led to the Panama Papers? They went after that firm as part of Xi’s anti-corruption campaign, to send a message to the global bourgeois?

I don’t know how to change this to the English version but clicking around and reading some of the other articles I am to conclude that this is some kind of western propaganda site ran out of UC Berkeley?

Sorry, I assumed you could read Chinese. It just details how everything about the Panama Papers was scrubbed off the Chinese internet. I don't think there's an English version. It's a Chinese language site.

They do, it just doesn’t have an obvious way to switch languages. Here’s their English about page: https://chinadigitaltimes.net/about/

quote:

ABOUT CHINA DIGITAL TIMES
China Digital Times (CDT) is an independent, bilingual media organization that brings uncensored news and online voices from China to the world.

We achieve this through:

* Filtering and aggregating news from English-language media and placing it in a broader social and political context;
* Amplifying the voices of Chinese citizens through translation;
* Revealing the hidden mechanisms of state censorship by collecting and translating filtered keywords, propaganda directives, and official rhetoric;
* Interpreting the resistance discourse of Chinese netizens by introducing and translating the codes, metaphors, and satire created in response to breaking news and censored topics.

CDT English was launched in 2003 as a blog to track the development of the Internet in China and quickly grew into a more comprehensive news portal. In 2010, we launched CDT Chinese to aggregate content that has been censored or blocked in Chinese cyberspace. We select the most valuable and relevant material from CDT Chinese to translate for our English readers. CDT is based in Berkeley, CA, but our team contributes to the site from across the globe.

At any time, we welcome your feedback and suggestions. We also encourage you to join the discussions on our various social media sites.

I seem to remember the Panama paper linked to Xi's stashed money oversea. I am too lazy to search.

Of course you can say it was it driven by the anti Xi fraction. By don't spend too much energy on it, cause you can never tell the news source's authenticity.

Well I form my opinions based on what’s on Netflix, so that should give you an idea my level of laziness. I just think it’s weird that the movie ends with a fictional account of a German capitalist getting owned by a Chinese capitalist, who is turn owned by the CCP and then mysteriously the law firm for the wealthiest people in the world is exposed.

i'm amazed by this stuff.

someone in the government tells CBP to put a customs hold on some wigs on suspicion they are made of human hair (not actually illegal on its own) made with forced labor (that is) because these particular wigs came from a manufacturer in xinjiang. next they tip off you, an AP reporter, with a scoop about it, and then have CBP put out a press release. (btw a previous hold a few weeks ago on some hair turned out to be synthetic.) you then write a story that the hair "is suspected to be made out of human hair taken from people locked inside a chinese internment camp." and also, your source who tipped you off puts you in touch with a familiar name for context quotes: rushan abbas, a uighur-american "activist" who is connected up with the intelligence services and formerly worked as a translator-interrogator for al qaeda prisoners. ah, but don't mention that.

that's not all. axios here then reads the AP story and does some lazy googling / background research, and discovers an RFE/RL (i.e. U.S. government) story from a few weeks ago which claims human hair is being harvested from prisoners, citing "10 female former camp detainees" and a "pakistani trader who gave his name as amir" who heard about it from "his friend," followed by some speculation from a "human rights researcher" with the victims of communism foundation who's like "yeah that seems likely." also this researcher with victims of communism apparently got into serious legal hot water in taiwan after accusing ko wen-je, the progressive-liberal mayor of taipei, of organ harvesting... apparently his evidence for that was not so solid. so that's the "background," and also make sure to say "suspected" and "likely" here and there in front of claims about human hair harvesting, and put in the appropriate links back to RFE/RL in the story to cover your bases. and then send it to your editor who hits publish, and now lots of americans are frightened at the news that the chinese communist party is harvesting hair from people's skulls like the nazis.

and then the national security council says they're shocked by this dastardly new low for the communist party of china because axios reported it and they're credible, aren't they?
