The Botnik stuff is great. The Harry Potter chapter does read like it was heavily edited, but still good.

Every now and again I go to the reddit subredditsimulator for Floridaman.

The deal is: the person who runs /r/subredditsimulator takes an entire subreddit's titles and comments, and trains a Markov Chain on it, and makes that chain a user, with the username <subreddit name>_ss. That trained robot then makes posts with titles and comments based on that entire subreddit's "personality." So, /u/sex_ss is always talking about sex tips, /u/worldnews_ss is always talking about headlines and Trump and North Korea, etc.

Because "Florida Man" headlines always follow the same format, the user /u/floridaman_ss' posts are actually pretty coherent, and sometimes border on reality (or make more sense than reality). Give it a read:

The book markov chain dataset ended up being oddly lucrative and while it's really rewarding to generate more funny book titles, I'm having a hard time figuring out where to show them. Those videos are made manually, albeit with a lot of shortcuts such as endless copy-pasting and palette swaps. There are animation sweatshops in Asia (?) churning them out.

I tried watching a few of them last year, they're kind of unsettling.

Mezzanine posted:

Actually I've seen it explained that they are in fact automated. They throw all of the content (characters, dances, songs, settings, etc) in and let the system churn out videos based on what's trending at any given moment. At least, those CG videos are done like that. You could easily automate the entire process front-to-back, even uploading the video and publishing it.

Really? There was a thread about this last year, I want to say in GBS, and I distinctly remember people saying the creators intervened manually...but maybe that's covered by setting the parameters.

People gripe about malicious AIs but I feel like these AI are actually really lazy

These all read like things that lazy/cheating humans would do so AI has truly come a long way

e: like this, this is exactly what a human being would do in a poorly coded multiplayer game

Creatures exploited physics simulation bugs by twitching, which accumulated simulator errors and allowed them to travel at unrealistic speeds

e2: I love these

quote:

In an artificial life simulation where survival required energy but giving birth had no energy cost, one species evolved a sedentary lifestyle that consisted mostly of mating in order to produce new children which could be eaten (or used as mates to produce more edible children).

e3: Again, exactly what an online troll would do

quote:

An evolutionary algorithm learns to bait an opponent into following it off a cliff, which gives it enough points for an extra life, which it does forever in an infinite loop.

e4: lmao

Apologies for the colours. The results are of course less interesting than with a predictive keyboard, but I think there are some nice ones there. "Rhythm Company B" is somehow very amusing to me.

I feel like procedural generation works well with band names as the real ones often don't make sense to begin with.

I do think it got lazy in some cases, Dubstars and Zebraheads are just actual bands with an -s added, Atomic Kittie is almost identical to Atomic Kitten
