That might be good enough for the think tank circuit, but not for the MIC grift leagues. The compass needs a $3 million computer system which automatically flips the labels round (and which doesn't work half the time, requiring regular servicing from a Lockheed-certified contractor).

I find it very easy to believe that the USA is incapable of even pretending to implement rationing of any kind. Remember all the many instances of stores responding to various moments of crisis by ramping up their prices on essential, basic supplies? There are always plenty of people willing to jump in and explain that such behaviour ensures that the stuff only goes to those who really need it, that the seller is perfectly within their rights to do so, supply and demand, economics 101, and so on. Everyone here has seen it multiple times at least. The counterargument is always that no, that's bullshit, they're charging way above a fair price even for the circumstances, and it will just lead to the rich hoarding it all. But it just doesn't seem to cross people's minds to make the leap to suggest rationing, because market thinking is so deeply embedded as the only possible solution to all problems. The thought simply never enters most people's minds.

DancingShade posted:The USA can't even make a pair of leather boots using entirely domestic sourced products / components. You people of the South don't know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don't know what you're talking about. War is a terrible thing! You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it … Besides, where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth — right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.

You need to come up with a whole new rifle specifically for arctic conditions, which of course uses an entirely new calibre of ammunition which you market as being the optimal choice for those conditions. Then you need to make half the parts out of an alloy that goes brittle past about -10C so you can sell a ton of spare parts.

I look forward to hearing from the most reputable OSInt accounts on twitter that these tanks are made of cardboard and moved around by a team of 3 slave-soldiers running on a big hamster wheel inside it while making vroom-vroom noises to impress tourists. If they don't make good enough engine noises then everyone in the town they grew up in is executed by being launched out of a circus cannon into a volcano.
