Teriyaki Hairpiece posted:Just lack of communication is a universal thing in all wars and especially WWI. Have a unit that advanced a little too far and a little too fast for the timetable. Have an officer realize they're in an area where they're not supposed to be and they're about to be subjected to the mother of all artillery barrages and their pigeons are dead and their phone lines are cut (because it's WWI). So they send back a runner. He goes through all sorts of convoluted war adventures but gets back to HQ and gets his message in just a little too late. The end of the movie is our hero on a faraway hill watching his mates get blown up by high explosive in a horrible mistake. He's helpless, the system is helpless, his friends are helpless, and no one is really at fault. Also he's perversely happy because by chance he's somehow alive when they're all dead. War is just hosed up like that. I’d like to see this lighthearted romp of a ww1 book made into a movie: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/45878. it’s a firsthand account of a German landing party that is left by their ship on an island in the South Pacific. if you want spoilers (for a 105-year-old story), the author is Hellmuth von Mücke who has one of the driest senses of humor I’ve ever read and here’s a snippet: The Englishmen on the island were little pleased at the prospect, and begged permission, in case it should come to a battle, to withdraw to one of the other islands. Their request was granted. Accompanied by two of my signal men, I now took my station on the roof of the highest house to watch the fight between the two cruisers. As a whole, the Englishmen showed little interest in the conflict that was going on but a few thousand meters distant from the island. Other matters seemed to claim their attention. With an ingratiating smile one of them stepped up to our officers, who were head over ears in work down on the beach, and asked: “Do you play tennis?” It was an invitation which, under the circumstances, we felt compelled to decline.

Isn't this just a little inappropriate for a dumb sitcom? this has been around since the dawn of the internet though? pop culture reviews always have to justify themselves and many of them do that by reading really far into the material or weaving really nonsensical narratives into things, nothing pitchfork wasn’t doing 15 years ago though. people are so connected now that you can get a read on what your social group is watching or listening to and their immediate review of it so reviewers have to work twice as hard to churn out emotionbait words about them for those sweet hot clicks someone posted the Steven universe clip about him at a therapist talking about trauma and I think it’s actually cool and good that kid’s shows are teaching about mental illness and nobody posting here gets to comment about parasocial relationships theflyingexecutive has issued a correction as of 10:50 on Mar 18, 2020 |

rewatched Air Force one right after Chapo and trueanon’s refreshers on yeltsin and hoo boy: -just nodded at everything Gary oldman had to say -lol at the us repeatedly tripping on their dick by kidnapping a foreign leader on orders of a puppet Russian president to start the whole plot then killing said leader on the orders of said puppet as he’s walking triumphantly out of prison then shooting down jets over sovereign airspace like holy poo poo how could that have no repercussions, not to mention the communist forces still controlled Kazakh airfields enough to launch fighters -they had to make the mustache-twirling General a genocidiere just to justify any of the preceding (they don’t even say against whom because I’m sure the writers had no clue where Kazakhstan even was until the art department had to make the map for the radar display) -decorum-poisoned veep doesn’t 25A the president for some reason and is never justified -many people think “get off my plane” is the highlight of the movie. nope, it’s the prisoners singing the internationale over AF1’s PA system

The script needed a few more rounds of editing, the acting needed a few more takes, they really needed to do some scenes again, the whole thing could be tightened up. But presumably the economics don't allow for it I feel that with the huge wave of new high-budget shows, more and more power is being taken out of the hands of the creators and writers in favor of producers feeding the algorithm. also you get a lot of green writers and directors who don’t know or can’t get what they want creatively and get rolled by the studios

my current film job does mandatory 3x testing per week and if you get a vaccinated destination on your badge, you're allowed to ride in production vans/buses and take your mask off outdoors. it's one of the only industries I've heard of doing it right, but that's because the unions continue to fight for it and 90% of the crew can't wfh they also tell us that only 60% of the crew is vaxxed

Eric Cantonese posted:I'm so tired. I am interested in watching the movie so I'm not looking for spoilers, but does the segment at least make sense in the context of the film or is it just some random ching-chong-wing-wong poo poo thrown in for shits and giggles? so the bit is this white guy and his Japanese wife (who doesn't speak English) open a sushi restaurant. he talks to her in very slow, loud, racist-accented English and she talks in very fast Japanese. the first scene with them leaves some ambiguity as to how much he can understand her but the next time he shows up, he has a new Japanese wife who doesn't speak English and admits he has no idea what she's saying. the protagonists don't critique or call him out for what he's doing, but the husband isn't portrayed as sympathetic either. it's made pretty clear that the wife is the competent one actually running the place, food and business wise, so the joke isn't exclusively the husband's accent like Mickey Rooney, it's more their weird dynamic as a couple and how uncontroversial his behavior was for the valley in the 70s it's also two scenes total out of the whole film, one of the many vignetted stories theflyingexecutive has issued a correction as of 10:38 on Dec 14, 2021 |
